bobbob1313
I'm quite saddened by this. He was an incredibly important and influential writer, not to mention his immense skill. And one of the only people who has never been afraid to say anything he wanted, and was one of the few people to call out Bush in the run up to Iraq. "A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved." http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/12/books/12vonnegut.html?hp RIP, Kurt. You'll be missed. Guest FlummoxedLummox
I was just talking about this with a friend. What a shame. He's one of the few people who can say that he's left a legacy that will long survive his death.
Izzie
R.I.P. - at least he got to live a long life and made something out of it. I admit I only know who he is because I did research paper on him in 10th grade but I thought he wrote some awesome stuff.

EricWiener
How many "great American writers" do we even have left? Depends on your level of snobbery. Since academia is so monolithic anymore, they are reluctant to bring in modern authors, especially if they are differing points of view. Mabdul Doobakus
John Updike is pretty great. Tom Wolfe is still around, though I've never read anything by him.
HelmsE
Damn shame... Slaughter House V was a classic and Player Piano one of my favorite books to this day..
yokofox33
Talk about irony, we just finished reading Slaughterhouse Five in my Contemporary Literature class and turned in our papers on Wednesday. I hope our crappy papers didn't kill him. Great book though, I'm definitely going to check out some of his other books. RIP
bobbob1313
All this stuff at VaTech reminds me of one of my favorite Vonnegut quotes: "We are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is."
