May 23, 200719 yr Author Just a reminder, was just throwing that out there and would not want to see it happen. I think Jeremy will be an excellent RBI man, not just an OBP guy who people want to put in the top of the lineup. I want his lefty bat driving in runs, and letting hanley get on base and running up a storm. I've seen em all but i like this one the best SS Hanley 2B Uggla 3B Cabrera LF Willingham RF Hermida 1B Jacobs C Olivo CF Amezaga Uggla needs protecting, Jeremy doesnt.. why move Uggla when hes racking up doubles at an incredible pace? Those most likely wouldnt be doubles batting 6th. And I firmly believe Hermida can be a wonderful RBI man and hes a better hitter than Jake, so i want him getting more ABs. Jake will get plenty of RBI chances with Willy and Hermida in front of him. As for Hanley batting 3rd, i just dont like it. I want him getting on base, which means as many ABs as possible batting leadoff.. and moving Cabs 4th just takes away ABs from one of the best hitters in the league.
May 23, 200719 yr There are a few lineups I can come up with. Based on the "strengths" of the player (OBP -v- SLG, tendency to K, etc) I found that we have a few versatile players that can hit in more than one spot acceptably. Hanley - 1-3 Hermida - 1-3; 5,6 Cabrera - 3-4 Jacobs - 5-7 Willingham 2-5 Uggla 6-8 Olivo 7-8 CF P That would be my lineup, and I can understand justifying hitting the above mentioned players in any of the other spots I mentioned. I like the idea of Hanley leadoff because his OBP ability, his occasional homerun and his ability to create on the basepaths (his SB% is fantastic, so it's not just about speed). To me, that suits him and our offense better than asking him to change his game in the 3-hole. Hermida second makes a ton of sense to me. 1) He's left-handed and thus obstructs the catcher's view of 1st base, even if it only buys Hanley an extra step, that's all he needs. 2) He takes a ton of pitches. That puts the pitcher in the tough situation of maybe having to throw a fastball in a fastball count because of Hanley, and we know Hermida can hit a fastball. Plus, I like the thought of hit-and-running with Hermida a lot more than Uggla. Cabrera third to maximize his AB's. There really isn't much that needs to be said for Miggy. Jacobs 4 because I can't think of another place to put him. His SLG trails only Miggy, Hanley and Willingham, so he's somewhat suited for the 4-hole. Plus, it sandwiches a lefty. Willingham's 5 because his OBP skills may exceed his slugging in terms of player "value" and the 5-hole leads off more innings than any spot other than leadoff. Hammer's the guy for the 5-spot. Uggla's 6th so he can hit .250 with 25 HR's and no one can complain. In the 6 spot, Uggla can just swing for the fences and it won't hurt us as much as it does when he's doing it batting second. Plus, with the guys we have batting 1-5, someone should be on for Dan, so he'll get RBI chances. Olivo 7th just because I think he has slightly more value than whoever we throw in centerfield. And whoever plays centerfield 8th because I don't want to maximize their AB's.

Also, as I have mentioned before, having Hanley bat in front of Miggy will probably make Ramirez think twice about stealing, since the opposing team will most likely intentionally walk Cabs. Hanley is taken out of his element in the 3 spot.
May 23, 200719 yr With everyone healthy: 1) De Aza: CF: He is a better hitter than Reggie and we let him leadoff, and De Aza has the speed. 2) Hermida: RF: He can work pitchers and is showing some power, he has good bat controll and is a lefty, which sets up a lot of possibilities on the bases for De Aza 3) Ramirez: SS: He is just a great all around hitter 4) Cabrera: 3B: Same as above 5) Jacobs (vs righties): 1B: Big powerful left handed bat. 6) Uggla: Tough choice between Uggs and Hammer but...... 7) Willingham: LF: Provides great power for the bottom of the lineup. 8) Olive: C:Well 8 hitters are known for swinging at bad pitches....a natural fit =/ Against lefties my 5,6,7 would be Willingham, Jacobs, Uggla I would hate hitting some of those guys so low, but I really think that lineup could work.
May 23, 200719 yr That's just silly. We need a centerfielder, we don't need to go moving people around. Anyway, I'd go with 1. Hanley SS 2. Hermida RF 3. Cabrera 3B 4. Jacobs 1B 5. Hammer LF 6. Uggla 2B 7. De Aza CF 8. Olivo C That's where I'd go. I would go back to swapping Hammer and Jacobs based on lefty/righty. I think Hanley is much better at lead off. I also think Hermida has earned his way back up the lineup when everyone is healthy with his recent play.
May 23, 200719 yr Guys, let's not go and forget about De Aza already, either. We're gonna need to find a way to get Boone into the everyday lineup, but I'm having a hard time thinking of a way to make it happen. On the plus side, Boone definitely gives us some nice trade bait for the deadline... And to the people that want to move Uggla down in the lineup and bat Hermida second, that's not a good idea. If you move Uggla to the six hole, all of his protection from hitting in front of Cabrera and/or Hanley is gone. He'll stop seeing the fastballs that he jacks out of the park. Hermida has fantastic plate discipline, and can handle the middle of the order alot better.

If you give Hermida the protection of Cabrera or Ramirez all of a sudden the top of the lineup is putting up great numbers and the bottom of the order has some real pop. Just my opinion of course. I think this lineup is very flexible when everyone is healthy.

Hermida's an exponentially better player than him, and Hermida's going to have to earn the 2-hole. As for Uggla. I love the man, but the object of a lineup is to help the team win, not get the best numbers possible for an individual player. That 1-5 is absolutely scary, and if Uggla and De Aza contribute anything, I'd have no qualms saying we have the potential to be a top 5 lineup in the NL. With Uggla 2 and Jake 4/5 two of your top 5 hitters are real threats to be rally killers, and that can't work. IMO, you can only have one K heavy slugger in the top-5, not 2.

Willingham hits much better against Righties. Why would you have him hittng 7 against righties and 5 against lefties? That seems backwards to me.
May 23, 200719 yr Because his righty/lefty splits are a fluke so far this season. If you look at his production from last year over a full season he hit lefties well. He has just had bad luck so far this season facing some tough ones. What I mean in short is that those splits will even out, I expect him to slow down some against righties and pick up against lefties.
