Willis heads home: Dontrelle Willis returned to South Florida on Tuesday afternoon to tend to a family-related matter.

The left-hander is expected to rejoin the club in Los Angeles before his scheduled start on Friday against the Dodgers.

"I think he will be back [by then]," Gonzalez said.

Willis was at PETCO Park on Tuesday afternoon, where he was getting his between-starts work done with a bullpen session. But about two hours before the game started, he was preparing to head to the airport to return to his South Florida home.

Willis is 7-7 with a 4.65 ERA in 18 starts. As of now, Gonzalez has no intentions of making contingency plans for a starter in case Willis isn't back.

I hope everything is okay with his family. Just say if Dontrelle is unable to come back Friday I wonder who we are going to use. Wes will probably pick off where JJ left off and I think Kim is pitching on Thursday. Who knows.

this could be anything...his wife or his child...perhaps this could be the reason for his recent downfall.

Vanden Hurk is in AAA now, with Albuquerque being reasonably close to Los Angeles (in relation to Miami), he could be a quick call up.

on a related note, the Dodgers feed is carried on the radio in albuquerque and I can actually listen to Sunday's game!

The Phillies would be wise to hold onto Carlos Carrasco unless trading him would bring them a proven, mid-to-late 20s starter who would be under their control for more than a year or two. If a package of Carrasco, Bourn or Victorino and a mid-level prospect could land them someone like Florida's Dontrelle Willis, the Phillies would have to consider pulling the trigger on a deal. -- The Morning Call
