The Marlins have a great old-school baseball team that has speed at the top of the order with clutch guys behind them ? and a little power mixed in. The Yanks' veterans will neutralize the Marlins' speed and will battle the Marlin starters like they haven't been battled all year. Rotation: New York I favor the Yanks here for a few reasons. The Yankees' starting four of Mike Mussina, Andy Pettitte, Roger Clemens and David Wells have more total wins in their career than the Marlins have in their franchise history (858-797)! Plus, Pettitte has one of the best pickoff moves of all time. Wells is a lefty. Mussina is extremely quick to the plate and holds runners well. That trio will shut down the Marlins' potent running game. Bullpen: Even Are two really good relievers better than one great one? That is the question. One would figure that in the playoffs, if you are using your middle relievers too much, you are in trouble. And in my mind, Ugueth Urbina + Braden Looper = Mariano Rivera. Infield: Florida The Marlins' infield and catcher positions have been more productive than the Yanks this postseason. Pudge Rodriguez alone would sway my vote, but Derrek Lee may well be back on track. Defensively, they are close to even in my book. Outfield/DH: Even Both teams boast solid defense in the outfield with similar offensive production. If the Marlins decide to DH Mike Lowell in Yankee Stadium, this may shift to the Marlins, but it's too close to call. Manager: New York Joe Torre showed his experience and leadership by taking Clemens out of Game 7 against the Red Sox. Others this postseason have watched their studs falter late. He knows this team and has been there too many times not to get the nod over Jack McKeon. :thumbdown

He doesn't even follow that up with "they will do it by....x, y, z," People get paid to say garbage like this? What does that even MEAN??? The Marlins small-ball label is a mirage. They are winning with clutch hitting. Not to mention that the Marlins have somehow been beating all these teams WITHOUT stolen bases. It's not as if the team needs to steal bases in order to win. Frankly at this point I'd rather them not attempt many steals. Jack McDowell grades the defensive infields "Even", which should automatically disqualify every opinion he's ever held or will hold for the rest of his life. Nice try BlackJack.
October 17, 200322 yr I've been following McDowell's columns since early August, and it's comforting to know that in late August he picked the Marlins, yes our Marlins, to be the first ones to drop out of the wild card race! He picked the Dodgers to win the wild card all along, which wasn't necessarily a bad pick in August, but he insisted that the Marlins would fade quicky for many of the same reasons everyone else in the media dismissed them. Just count McDowell as another non-believer who got proven wrong!
October 17, 200322 yr As a Sox fan, even I have to admit McDowell has been a moron in prediciting the post-season... His World Series was Cubs/A's... HA! Laughable! The A's didn't even make it out of the first round. McDowell is a pitcher so he leans toward pitching, but has no respect for the type of ball the Marlins play. Go Fish!
