RVH is simply a stud

Juan Encarnacion proving that even though he and Hermida lead the league in errors for LF, there's a big gap in defensive talent between the two of them (See the piss rod that threw out Jacobs by 10 feet)

That's because Jacobs hit a single. He had no business going to 2nd. Any RF would could have thrown him out. It was just a horrible base running error.

Did you see where the infielder caught the ball?

Encarnacion hit the webbing of his glove.

If you think any RF"r can do that you are nuts.

A ball 34.7% of the time is not a good thing.

Actually... that's a pretty good ratio. Throwing strikes 65.3% of the time is definitely solid.

He has 38 Ks in 34 innings he has just nasty stuff

I'm not ready to induct him in the HoF just yet. He doesn't have nasty stuff. He has good stuff with inconsistent command. Last night he wiggled out of trouble a couple of times and the Cards certainly helped him out with boneheaded baserunning. Reading this thread and listening to the announcers one would think this guy has dominated so far this season. His stats indicate otherwise. I don't think his stats lie.

Couple of comments. 1) He's only 22... believe he turned 22 during the season. 2) I disagree with you about his stuff... I think he's got nasty stuff.

After watching him for more or less 4 seasons, I think anyone's nuts if they think Encarnacion's the bench mark for a right-fielder.

He has to be one of the laziest players I've ever seen, Luis bailed him out more than a few times on balls in front of him, and people still run on him because while he has a world class arm he takes his sweet ass time getting to it.

Plus, Jacobs had no business trying to stretch it, that's all on Jacobs and a big thumbs up to Juan for taking advantage of it.

It pretty funny that a guy can have one great outing and ppl start throwing the terms stud and putting him as a #4 or #5 guy for our "big" run in 2008

You kind of took my post and ran a flank pattern around it.

All Im getting at there are some RF"s who don't make such an accurate or strong throw as the one Encarnacion made (Hermida being one of them).

Im not stupid so you guys don't have to tell me "yeah but it was Jacobs running and he shouldnt have run anyway".

I know that.

I never said he was the "benchmark" for a RF.

He threw an absolute laser strike to 2B and I was just commenting on that.

And a broken clock is still right twice a day.

I always thought Enc was a very good defensive outfielder, except for what Tommy Hutton last night called "Encarnacion moments", which in last night's case referred to a head-scratching steal attempt where he chose not to slide into 2nd and even seemed to slow down at the end.... but you'd see the same sort of thing in the outfield sometimes from him.

anyway, back to Hurk, I'll take that start from a 22 year old. :thumbup

I disagree with you about his stuff... I think he's got nasty stuff.

My guesstimate is that over the past 12 months you've said around 8-10 Marlin pitchers have nasty or great stuff. I think guys like Beckett and Verlander have nasty or great stuff. I think we have different definitons of what a pitcher with nasty or great stuff is. If I went down every team maybe I could come up with 10 pitchers who have what I consider nasty or great stuff in all of MLB. Based on what I've read from you I think you could probably come up with 100.

When a guy is 22 years old, starts like this are encouraging. I don't know if he'll be in the rotation come next Opening Day but, like I said, he has a future #2 or #3 starter.

Mid to upper 90s fastball. A delicious curveball that he just needs to gain confidence in and throw for some consistency. Working on his change and a cutter. Wouldnt bother me if he started working a splitter into his arsenal.

The kid has very good stuff right now, but if he gets the curve, cutter, and change working...with his velocity and his ability to change speeds...he is going to be nasty.

Mid to upper 90s fastball.

He doesn't have a mid to upper 90s fastball. This is not as ridiculous as the ones who claim Olsen is a hard thrower but it's still ridiculous. RVH fastball is in the low 90s to mid 90s.. leaning towards low 90s. He has good stuff. There's no use in exaggerating.

Actually, you're wrong. I only think a few Marlins' pitchers have nasty stuff... RVH, Mitre, and Olsen. I'll add Carlos Martinez to that list, too, even though he's not with the big club.

To me, nasty stuff does not automatically equal being one of the top 10-12 pitchers in baseball. It means that if you're locating your pitches you're basically unhittable. When Mitre's sinker is sinking and he's keeping it down, he's basically unhittable. Same with RVH and Olsen.

Some pitchers with good stuff can be unhittible if they hit their locations and have a good game plan. JJ, Willis, and Anibal come to mind.
