In two games in September, the Florida Marlins' offense has exploded for 19 runs, and they now enter a three-game series at Washington riding a two-game win streak -- the first time they have pieced together back-to-back wins since Aug. 10.

 

The Marlins hope it is a sign of offensive production to come.

 

"We haven't seen this in a while," said left fielder Josh Willingham, who is out with a sore back but hopes to be back in the lineup on Monday. "Hitting is contagious, no doubt. It's been a lot of fun [the past two days]."

 

The Marlins scored seven runs in the first inning on Saturday, and then tied a franchise record with five home runs in one game in Sunday's 7-6 win. Florida totaled 10 hits on Sunday and 13 hits on Saturday.

 

Pitcher Dontrelle Willis even got into the act on Sunday, scorching a leadoff pinch-hit double to center field in the fifth inning.

 

After facing the Nationals in three games, Florida plays at Philadelphia from Friday through Sunday, and the Marlins don't intend to let up -- at the plate or mentally.

 

"We may not be in contention for the playoffs, but we're still setting a standard for next year," closer Kevin Gregg said.

FLA: RHP Rick VandenHurk (4-4, 6.59 ERA)

With caution, the Marlins are looking at VandenHurk, who has now logged 72 1/3 innings at the big league level this season to go along with 65 2/3 innings during his Minor League stints. Yet, despite logging 139 total innings, VandenHurk is coming off one of his finest big league outings. In his last start, a no-decision against the Braves, the 22-year-old established a personal high by striking out eight batters in five-plus innings. VandenHurk has not thrown more than 5 2/3 innings since logging six on July 22 against the Reds.

 

WSH: RHP Jason Bergmann (2-5, 4.56 ERA)

Bergmann, who missed more than a month because of tightness in his left hamstring, returned last Tuesday and ended up having his best start since May 14, when he held the Braves hitless for seven innings. Bergmann pitched six innings and gave up three runs on six hits against the Dodgers.

 

Player to watch

Cody Ross has been swinging a hot bat for Florida. In the three-game series with Philadelphia, the outfielder raised his average to .315, homering in three of his last five at-bats.
