Dodd: End Embargo

Featured Replies

Good for him, I know this is going to catch sh*t here but its a balsy move by him and nice to see someone not afraid of the whole "OMG he supports Fidel". The role of a US president is to protect American Interests first and foremost. The plight of the American Farmer is overdone by people who usually don't have any connection to farming but in this case I say he's right on.

(CNN)?Senator Chris Dodd says the current U.S. policy toward Cuba is not working, and offered his own proposal.

"Our Cuba policy has neither served America's interests nor brought democracy to Cuba. It has only served to strengthen the current regime," the Democrat from Connecticut said in a campaign release. "I am proposing these changes to the current policy because they make sense and are the right thing to do - for the Cuban people, but more importantly for America. And I refuse to let Fidel Castro or his successor determine the timetable for setting America's policy."

Dodd, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, said he would end the U.S. trade embargo with Cuba, open Cuban markets to American farmers, bring families closer together by lifting travel restrictions and cap remittances, and opening a full American embassy in Havana.

Dodd spoke in Miami on Saturday, a day before he and the other Democratic candidates are to appear in a debate hosted by Univision.

A Democrat asking to end the embargo really isn't news

I don't see any negatives at this point. Embargo has been in place since the 60's. Lift it.

It's basically there only as a 'principle'.

The people of Cuba wont see any benefit only the cock sucker Castro and his henchmen. I dont want to lift an embargo for the people of Cuba to still suffer and this a**hole make even more money.

That's just a theory though. I think it's more likely that an open Cuba would be more likely to throw off the shackles of Communism, or at least weaken the current regime.

My g/f certainly wouldn't agree, but her grandparents did live in Cuba until Castro took power, and then had to leave.

Either way it wont make a difference one way or the other.

The Cigar industry vehemently disagrees.

So true.

Although you know how much cheaper those suckers would be...

If you want Cuban cigars, just let me know. I make a 4 hour trip into Canada and I can load the car down with that stuff. That's how effective this embargo is.

That extremely locked down border between NY and Canada must be a real pain to get through. :mischief

it is basically there to be pointed at as a way to snag votes. If the US would do something more about castro it would be great. But politically speaking it is a useful tool for one side or the other over the years.

I would personally love to see nothing more then the current jackasre in charge down there die off finally and perhaps work towards a peaceful freedom from oppression for the people of cuba
