Posted October 17, 200717 yr After being named the 2006 National League Rookie of the Year, Hanley Ramirez has been voted by his peers as The Sporting News' top NL shortstop. Just 23, Ramirez has already blossomed into one of the game's most versatile threats. In 2007 he batted .332 with 29 home runs, 81 RBIs, 51 stolen bases and a franchise-record 125 runs scored. --- The Sporting News awards are voted on by the players themselves, so Ramirez collects his latest honor by winning the admiration of those who play the game. link
October 17, 200717 yr Miggy lost out to Wright Miggy lost out to dogging it for the last two months while Wright turned it on. They were fundamentally the same offensively as a result, and neither is a dominate defensive force.
October 17, 200717 yr Miggy lost out to Wright Miggy lost out to dogging it for the last two months while Wright turned it on. They were fundamentally the same offensively as a result, and neither is a dominate defensive force. Wright got hot during the last couple of months, and Cabrera, for about 15 games, went into a horrible slump. I hardly call that "dogging it," unless you actually think he didn't care at the plate. Anyway, he bounced back in September with a .343 average & 26 RBIs.
October 17, 200717 yr Wright deserved it over Miggy. Miggy: .320/.401/.565 (OPS of .966) and 34 HR and 119 RBI Wright: .325/.416/.546 (OPS of .962) and 30 HR and 107 RBI The numbers are basically a wash, except that Miggy hit for more power and drove in more runs. I still take Miggy's year over Wright's.
October 17, 200717 yr Wright also stole 34 bases at a 87.18% clip, and played a lot better defense. They were push at the plate but Wright > Miggy in basically everything else in the game last year. Not saying I'd rather have Wright then Cabrera, I doubt Cabrera's offense is this "bad" against next year. Looking at the peripherals, it shouldn't be.
October 17, 200717 yr Yeah, he kind of had a down year for his standards. I was expecting his OBP to be higher.
October 17, 200717 yr Yeah, he kind of had a down year for his standards. I was expecting his OBP to be higher. He had his 2nd highest OBP, his 2nd highest SLG and had career highs in RBIs and HRs so it's ridiculous to say he had a down year.
October 17, 200717 yr I think the point is, considering his age, he was expected to improve off last year. And while he did show the most power in his career (.245 ISO), his OBP went down by 30 points. I think the main thing is that his LD dropped off. 24.3% in 2005, 24.2% last year, but only 20.7% this year. That goes back to ~24%, his OBP goes up considerably.

Line Drive percent Out of the three possibilites of a hit ball (ground ball, fly ball, and line drive), line drive's have the highest probability of landing for a hit (IIRC, ~75% of the time they fall for a hit). Increase his LD% by 4 and he would have had ~13 more hits, or a .342 BAA.
October 18, 200717 yr That award should be renamed to Best Offensive SS. By no means did he show he was the best defensive SS in the NL. At times, yes. But not consistently. HOWEVER (before I get jumped on) IMO he will become a GGer.

I think Cabrera had an interesting offensive campaign. On August 1, he was batting .340 and was on pace for career highs in average, homers, RBI, slugging and OPS. Then he went into that uncharacteristically long slump, which shot his average down to .313ish. Granted, slumps are part of the game, but Cabs is normally a mini-slump guy; they never last that long.
