Is Ricky Nolasco ready to go in 2008?

Featured Replies

I saw on the Marlins website that he is going to pushing for a spot in the rotation. Does this mean he will be 100% in spring training and does he have #1 starter's stuff when healthy? i recall he was shut down early due to a sore elbow last season.

He was pretty good in in 2006.

Perhaps he will come back strong and make a push to start opening day. or will Sergio Mitre get the nod?

And CF?

will it be De Aza if Maybin isn't ready?

Not sure if he will be 100%, but one thing I do know is that he does not have #1 stuff, no matter how healthy.

As far as CF, I am in the camp that thinks we start Maybin in the minors, and let De Aza, Ross, or whoever control CF for the first couple months, due to service time issues.

I don't know how healthy he really was in May 2007, but he sure did look awful. Very poor control and many of his pitches didn't even make it to the plate. Of all of the young arms the Marlins have in the system, he's not one I'm expecting to win a spot in the rotation.

He is supposedly healthy and has regained most, if not all, of his velocity. Won't really know that until spring training, but you would imagine he will be the favorite for the 5th starter spot against Vanden Hurk, Doug Waecther, and Dan Barone, if he is healthy and back to his 06 form. As for his overall stuff, he's never been viewed as a future # 1 starter. Scouts think a best case scenario as a 3/4, or being an above average swing man. I think he'll be moved to the pen sometime this season when Anibal, Volstad, and G. Hernandez are ready to claim rotation spots. He'll probably be a much better pitcher in one inning bursts. I also can't see the Marlins sending him out opening day if he makes the rotation. I'm pretty confident they will set the rotation in this order - Olsen, Mitre, Hendrickson, A. Miller, Nolasco. Olsen is most tenured on this team and seems fired up about it. Entrusting him as the "ace" on paper could be the moment that finally makes it click for him. He's much better than 07.

If Cody, Carroll, Maybin, and Amezaga all get hurt, I can see De Aza being in the competition to start opening day.

Nolasco has the potencial to be a number three starter in the bigs at best, but a good one.

Nolasco is healthy, pain free. He was throwing every day here before he headed back to Florida and putting in all of his conditioning time. He's ready to go, ready to make a statement. He's not a #1 starter, but he's a solid 3-4. I just hope he doesn't get the shuttle spot as the early season fifth starter. I can't see going with three lefties in four days early on in the season.

that is great news. read that on the team site also.

On Thursday, he [Nolasco] was at the team's golf event, and said he is fully healthy and ready to get going in Spring Training.

I agree with Lou, he gets a rotation spot for the beginning of the season at least.
