March 19, 200818 yr Somehow, we have already reached five years since the initial F-117 Stealth Fighter attacks on a farm outside Baghdad that effectively started the Second Gulf War. Five years since that fateful night, we have lost close to 4000 U.S. soldiers, with 25,000 injured or crippled. In addition, between 400,000 and perhaps a million Iraqi civilians have died in that period. Estimates have placed the cost of five years of war and occupation at between $400 billion and $2 trillion. Sadly, after five years, there is still no end in sight. Feel free to reflect.
March 24, 200818 yr Author According to the Pentagon, four more US soldiers were killed today, pushing the US death toll in Iraq to over 4000.
March 24, 200818 yr This country lost 3600 men killed at war in a day. We've become a giant collection of pussies.
March 24, 200818 yr Author This country lost 3600 men killed at war in a day. We've become a giant collection of pussies. We had far more soldiers overall in each conflict, the further in history you go back. That's just the changing nature of war, where fewer men are generally needed as time goes on. Millions were lost in the Civil War and WWII, compared to tens of thousands in Vietnam. This country, and modern warfare, have both surpassed the point where 3600 soldiers will be killed on one given day. Check your history next time.
March 24, 200818 yr This country, and modern warfare, have both surpassed the point where 3600 soldiers will be killed on one given day. No, we've only surpassed the tolerance of it. We could lose that many in any actual war against a real world power. Imagine the destruction of a carrier task force by missle attack.

I don't think we've lost the tolerance for our soldiers dying if it's a cause we believe in.

March 24, 200818 yr Engaging in a conflict that could mean 3600 deaths in one day is by no means obsolete. It is foolish to think otherwise. maybe...just maybe...we shouldnt engage in worthless conflict then...seriously...can anyone tell me what the soldiers in iraq are fighting and dying for? but i agree with you here penguino...3600 military deaths in one day is hardly obsolete...technology has helped reduce that...but its the same technology that could kill a hell of alot more at the same time

I think we lost over 3,000 people in one morning on 9/11. I guess that wasn't an act of war?

Hard to belive but it is just that simple. I know. Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Whatever. The fact remains that we are fighting them over there (and winning) instead of getting blown up in shopping malls over here. You can agree or disagree. That is your right, and I won't judge you for it. But, it is that simple. We fight there so we don't have to fight here.
March 24, 200818 yr Author The idea that 'we will fight them over there so they don't come here' is absolutely absurd. That argument is based on the idea that there are a finite number of terrorists on the planet, which is false. Our actions in Iraq have turned into a rallying point for the Islamic extremist world, and have, if anything, given Osama bin Laden exactly what he wanted. That being a US-led invasion of a Middle Eastern country that had not directly attacked us. He had predicted before the Iraq war that this would occur, and we have proven him correct. How do you define 'winning'? Killing more suspected terrorists than US soldiers are killed? No one in the government has actually stated what qualifies as 'victory' in Iraq. If it is a functional democratic system, we are certainly not winning. The country's government has no power or authority, and can't make simple decisions. The Iraqi army, if you can call it that, has been heavily infiltrated by Shi'ia death squads determined to exact revenge on the Sunni minority for 25-30 years of brutal totalitarian rule under Saddam. Until there is some kind of settlement that puts an end to the roaming death squads and sectarian violence, the current situation could go on for decades. This country can't afford another $3 trillion in war costs for another 5 years, let alone 10. Again, if anything, Iraq has hurt the so-called 'war on terror', instead of helping it.

That argument is based on the idea that there are a finite number of terrorists on the planet, which is false. No, there is most certainly a finite number of terrorists. Bear in mind that OBL led his attacks upon us for our defense of a Middle Eastern country. Excuses are excuses and the people that think the world should be converted to their brand of Islam are going to use any excuse they want. We helped the Afghanis and one of thier largest factions still hated us. If somebody beats the crap out of a dog and feeds it gunpowder, you can't expect to show up with Milk Bones and make an instant friend.

March 25, 200818 yr Author I'm sorry, but it's just naive to say that there are a finite number of terrorists. They are created all the time when conditions in the Middle East continue to deteriorate, and each death of a family member(s) can potentially create another opponent of our actions, and can spur more radicalism. Our very presence in Iraq is going to continue to encourage more moderate Muslims to turn radical.

Bali bombings Britian subway bombings Numerous bombings in the middle east. Even if those things didn't exist, this line of argument is specious and illogical. Total bulls***. We created a hornet's nest over there involving Sunnis and Shiites and gave Iran enormous influence over that country. Your logic only works if you are simple-minded and see "them" as the same singular entity.

I haven't seen or read anything about them asking us to leave. "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" a fair enough portion of the soldiers who fought the british were nothing more than boys and farmers who believed in the right to govern themselves without having someone on their land telling them how to live yes they want us off their land...which would include saudi arabia, iraq, iran, and various other places that we occupy/have a presence in in the muslim world... my logic isnt blame america first either...im pointing fingers at both sides as both sides are wrong...we are wrong to be there in the first place, they are wrong for 9/11 and various other acts of terrorism taken out on civillians...but and this is a big but... they believe this is part of the war...and as we have shown in the past...we have no problem whatsoever with taking out civillians in the blink of an eye...hello firebombing of dresden, dropping the nukes on japan, napalm on the vietnamese, and the thousands of iraqi civillians we have killed in this conflict... and actually...none of them really want us there...the ones benefitting from our greed of oil...sure...they want us there, they are the ones in power and why we are actually there...but the average, everyday islamic person would rather deal with other average, everyday muslims rather than us christian swine any day of the week and 70 times on sunday...and that has been true since the dawn of time
