MIAMI -- The Marlins have yet another outfield ailment to deal with.

 

Alejandro De Aza, a platoon option in center field, was carted off the field on Saturday night in the ninth inning after sustaining a left ankle sprain while colliding with left fielder John Raynor on a play that turned into a three-run inside-the-park home run by the Yankees' Chad Moeller.

 

The left-handed-hitting De Aza was expected to split time in center field with Cody Ross, a right-handed hitter who has been recovering from a bone bruise on his left knee.

 

De Aza and Raynor collided on Moeller's one-out drive to left-center field off closer Kevin Gregg. De Aza remained on the ground as Moeller circled the bases on a play that rallied the Yankees to a 4-2 win in front of 32,229 at Dolphin Stadium.

 

Ross is expected to start in center field on Monday, when the Marlins open the regular season against the Mets in Miami. New York will start newly acquired left-hander Johan Santana.

 

De Aza's injury came in the ninth inning of the final Spring Training game for both teams. The Marlins will open the season with right fielder Jeremy Hermida on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, with a tight left hamstring.

 

So, how long go ankle sprains last? Who would take his place in center?

Carroll looks to be called up again in place of Hermida since Gomez will go back to AAA. Though they might keep both if De Aza goes on the 15 day DL.

Can anyone believe what happened to him tonight?

 

Is it the same ankle? I assume people know he was taken off the field on a stretcher tonight in the ninth inning.

 

This is almost deja vu all over again.

 

So right now, no Ross, no Hermida, no De Aza. Is Brett Carroll our starting centerfielder on Opening Day? :banghead

 

Unless they can sneak someone through they can't get Gomez on the 40, then active roster. There's a couple of candidates who could conceivably be used to make room but they have to get through waivers first and there isn't enough time. I forget what Barone's status but he's on the 40, I remember looking the other day and there was one possible other candidate but it was risky. Perhaps the thing working for the Marlins is everyone else has their *rosters* set too.

 

I'm just mentioning this because, well just because, but Reed is the starting centerfielder for Albuquerque. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view) he's not on the 40 man either.

 

It's one lousy situation.

This is horrible. And the worst part was all the Yankee fans cheering when it happened. I heard one scream "Be a man, walk it off!"

He has some bad luck.

That poor kid. Man, does he have some crappy luck. Two years in a row after two wonderful ST performances. Wow! Hope he's not out for too long. And when he returns, hope he has a better return than he did last year.

Barring any setbacks, I thought Ross was in line to start on opening day? He played in some minor league games and I haven't heard anything to indicate he isn't going to be ready in time.

 

Sucks about De Aza though. The first week or two of the season is going to be like spring training for Cody and without de Aza to platoon with him we might have a serious hole in the lineup.

I think that's what may play itself out but, and maybe I'm wrong, but it seems to me every time I hear Cody mentioned for Opening Day it's with the words "may be " or "hope". I'd like to know it's a 100% but so far I haven't read that from a reliable source.

We can move somebody like JJ from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL to make room on the 40 man

Maybin is the future. The only reason he's not up is b/c this team is cheap, and they want to avoid arbitration. That's fine when you have a guy like De Aza, but if he's out, we now have nothing.

That's not true but I suspect no *one* will convince you otherwise.

 

Maybin is in the minors because he belongs there, he is not major league ready or even close to it.

Calling up Maybin right now is not the solution. Our best option right now is to start Ross in a non-platoon situation and use Carroll as a back-up who's capable of playing all outfield positions.

 

If Ross is healthy and ready to go, he's more than capable of being a regular starter till either de Aza is healthy or the time comes to call up Maybin.
