May 24, 200818 yr Unfortunately for Hanley the all-star game is played in mid JUly and the selection process is over by early July. If the game was played after the seaosn then he would have belonged but because of when the game is played and when the players are selected, Hanley didn't belong either year. Run that by me again? He didn't belong in 2007? Renteria, Reyes and Hardy belonged over Hanley. I know you're ignoring defense as if it doesn't matter but it does matter and last year Hanley was the worst defensive SS in MLB and if I remember corectly Hanley also stunk it up with RISP the first half while Hardy was very good at it. These are the overall numbers as of 6/29. Given that Hanley sucked with the glove and sucked with RISP, he didn't belong over any of these three other guys Hanley - .897 Renteria - .886 Hardy - .845 Reyes - .858 ...and Hanley's offense still outweighed his poor defense...if you check "Win Shares" for SS's in MLB last year...Hanley led ALL SS's. That takes both offense AND defense, into account.

Assuming the "Win Shares" formula is correct (gigantic assumption), the relevant Win Shares numbers would be the ones on June 29th, not the ones at the end of the season. What were the Win Shares numbers on June 29th?
May 24, 200818 yr That's all well and good, but none of those guys are gold glove caliber defenders either, so Hanley's advantage offensively more than makes up for it. And defense has nothing to do with ASG selection. It's popularity with the fans, try represent each team as best as possible, and manager's favorites. If you are right, then Hanley will go down as the only player to ever be the best hitter at his position and be left off because of defense. He was left off because he wasn't as well known.
May 24, 200818 yr They were all better with the glove than Hanley and Reyes was faaaar better than Hanley. Also, as mentioned earlier, Hanley's first half RISP numbers stunk last year. That matters. Regarding whether voters (fans and players) take defense into account, I'm sure some do and some don't but in determining whether a guy was passed over, defense should be considered.

I can't really find an answer to your question, there...but fact of the matter is, NY players have an advantage when it comes to starting the "overrated popularity" Game, in July.
May 24, 200818 yr quick people vote uggla ovr utley http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2008/ballot_reg.html uggla keeps this up he should start but 3/4 of the country dosent kno his name Im voting for Uggla, Hanley, and Jacobs, being most deserving. There may be better options... but of the Marlins Im sayin. I don't think Jake is going to beat out Berkman(insane) or Pujols, and DLee and Adrian Gonzalez have better BAs with similar power #s.
May 25, 200818 yr And yet Uggla will not start the AS game. Uggla should win allsatr game votes he has better ba more hr and rbi's than utley also higher obp and a way higher slugpct as for hanley jesus chist wat happened that contract went to his head droped avg 40 points to 298 jacobs monster vs lefty and righty but injured frequently but defense is solid cant-u enought said rabello needs to just batt right cuz hes battin 200 lefty nd 325 righty hammer- having good year but hes injured alfredo- well hes fast cody ross- needs to hav an uggla like streak to help that avg
