Uggla vs. Utley

Featured Replies

ESPN ranks Uggla better then utley based just on stats...

RK PLAYER TEAM AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS

1 Dan Uggla FLA 164 36 53 17 1 14 32 2 1 21 46 .323 .402 .695 1.097

2 Chase Utley PHI 185 35 58 15 1 14 32 4 0 19 30 .314 .390 .632 1.022

looking just at the numbers uggla has 1 more run, 2 more 2B, same rbi, same hr, higher BA OBP SLG and OPS

BUT, Utley will surely get the nod in the allstar game. Sucks. :banghead

Meh, as long as Uggla stays ahead of him where it counts (division standings) it's ok.

YEAR TEAM POS GP GS INN TC PO A E DP FPCT RF ZR

Utley 2008 Phi 2B 48 46 409 244 107 131 6 33 .975 5.24 .824

Uggla 2008 Fla 2B 43 43 379 221 98 118 5 30 .977 5.13 .797

Utley is as better at fielding, as Uggla is at hitting. If that makes any sense?

Utley is generally ranked as one of the best fielding 2B's, whereas uggla is ranked at best average, and normally below average.

going by most defensive statistics...

In 2006 Uggla was roughly average

In 2007 (loss of Perry Hill and pre-game fielding drills), Uggla was argueably the worst in the majors.

This year (woo pre-game fielding drills), so far he's been about imbetween 2006 and 2007, so still below average, but not one of the worst.

You also have to remember the different park factors (hitters park v.s. pitchers park) when it comes to comparing offensive stats, so you could still argue that Uggla's been better even with the defensive difference.

From what I've seen, Uggla has been average to slightly above average this year. Not as good as Utley, but pretty good.

Also, Utley seems to have been playing slightly worse on D this year.

Uggla will be in the all-star game. The players will vote him in. There's no doubt about that. Very few guys who deserve to go get omitted.

As I understand it Uggla has a great deal of admiration for Utley, and says so. I also have read or heard that the feeling is mutual from Utley's side.

You can't not consider Utley the better player.

But to have the subject of who's better even debated shows how far Uggla has come this season.

He's gone from a power player with obvious flaws who was one of the better 2B in the game to a complete player who's playing as well as anyone in MLB at any position.

162 games is a long season. I'm personally just going to enjoy this ride for as long as it lasts. No one can convince me that Uggla is not a complete badass with many years of great baseball ahead of him. Is he as good as Utley, one of the best 2B in the last 50 years....ofcourse not. But he's pretty fu$king good and he's as hot as any player has been in years.

Let's throw the 5yr/30 million at him. How much more could it possibly take to lock him up.

His name is Dan F'ing Uggla Bitch! You better recognize.

Utley may be better but Uggla is playing better... so Uggla should be the allstar.

Hanley was omitted two years in a row.

Unfortunately for Hanley the all-star game is played in mid JUly and the selection process is over by early July. If the game was played after the seaosn then he would have belonged but because of when the game is played and when the players are selected, Hanley didn't belong either year.

Hanley was omitted cuz Reyes and Rollins were more popular, admit it. :mischief

Run that by me again? He didn't belong in 2007?

His stats leading up to June 29th, 2007(last day of all-star voting):

All-star backup JJ Hardy in the same period:

G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB IBB SO HBP SH SF GDP SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS

All-Star starter Jose Reyes:

I love the internet.

Renteria, Reyes and Hardy belonged over Hanley. I know you're ignoring defense as if it doesn't matter but it does matter and last year Hanley was the worst defensive SS in MLB and if I remember corectly Hanley also stunk it up with RISP the first half while Hardy was very good at it. These are the overall numbers as of 6/29. Given that Hanley sucked with the glove and sucked with RISP, he didn't belong over any of these three other guys

Hanley - .897

Renteria - .886

Hardy - .845

Reyes - .858
