Your 2011 Florida Marlins!

It'd be like Miguel Olivo with no arm.

Off on a tanget.. don't be shocked if Olivo makes the all-star team.

I would be. He's been playing well but has only caught 21 games and DH'd 13.

Varitek is going to start, it seems. So, off the top of my head, Navarro and Mauer are both hitting better than Olivo.

David Ortiz seems to be starting at DH, and Matsui would be his backup.

There is to much uncertainty because a lot of players will be traded off this team that will create depth at different slots. However, if you stay in house with what we have right now, and think they can afford about 5 'expensive' players (Hanley, Hermida, Uggla, A. Miller, and Johnson/Anibal, where these 5 could easily be $40 together and even if the rest of team is club controlled/early arbitration the price could quickly be around $55-60 in 2011), the best options the Marlins can probably still have under control in 2011 will be close to this:

C - Rabelo/Hayes/Smith

1B - Morrison/Sanchez

2B - Uggla/Coghlan

3B - Coghlan/Uggla

SS - Hanley

LF - Raynor/Cousins/Burns

CF - Maybin

RF - Hermida

B - Sanchez/Morrison, Raynor/Cousins/Burns, Rabelo/Hayes/Smith, Andino, Mitchell

SP - Johnson/Anibal, A. Miller, Volstad, Tucker, West/Trahern/Thompson/Hernandez

RP - Lindstrom/Owens, Sinkbiel, Cruz, Vanden Hurk, Winters, and the last 2 spots to the SP who don't get the 5 above and the emerging group of secondary pen prospects (Cyz, Leroux, Mobley, J. Delgado, H. Garcia, Marceaux, C. Martinez)

Top 5 2012 Prospects - Dominguez (3B), Stanton (1B/LF), Skipworth ©, Correa (SP/Top Setup), Hickman (LF)

Traded off team - Jacobs, Willingham, Olsen, Nolasco, Johnson/Anibal, Mitre, Gregg, J. Miller, Tank, Lindstrom/Owens, Kensing, Pinto, and probably some other P prospects. This should bring a nice haul and will probably change things dramatically at catcher, LF, and 3B. If Dan were to get traded and Coghlan inherits 2B, I'd expect a serious new SP prospect in there somewhere.

The only problem I see is we still need a starting catcher for 2009-2011 (minimum), but everything else looks to have acceptable long-term talent and acceptable stopgaps when you think about the minor league pitching depth, Macpherson, the slew of AAAA outfielders, and the never ending Gonzo/Boone/Helms/Cody/Conine free agents that can be scooped up ever year on the cheap.

This exercise is pretty stupid.

That said:

C - outside organization

1B - Gaby Sanchez/Logan Morrison

2B - Chris Coghlan

SS - Hanley Ramirez

3B - outside organization

LF - outside organization

CF - Cameron Maybin

RF - Jeremy Hermida

SP - Andrew Miller

SP - Chris Volstad

SP - Josh Johnson (IMO, Anibal Sanchez never throws more than 100 major league innings again in his career)

SP - Sean West or Aaron Thompson

SP - outside organization

Closer - Ryan Tucker

Coghlan has being playign 3B this week.

He did in college. He was only moved to 2B because of his lack of slugging potential. Moving him to 3B in Carolina is a strong indication to me they will be keeping Uggla for awhile (through arbitration), and Coghlan will start at 3B at least initially in the bigs once Cantu/Macpherson run their course.
