August 5, 200817 yr if we make the playoffs just make it a four man rotation with JJ, Anibal, Olsen, and Nolasco and we won't have to argue who gets kept out.
August 5, 200817 yr Author I don't know why people are so nervous about Ricky. If you have watched him the last 3 months he has been absolutely lights out. i know, but Ricky could just be another Mitre, a 1 season wonder, there are a lot of those around the league, i hope i am wrong, but the way Ricky pitches he can implode at any time Mitre's peripherals suggest he was lucky. Ricky's peripherals suggest he's an ace. It's not just the result that matters but how the result was obtained. The way Ricky is obtaining the results, he's inline to be able to continue his success. ` Yeah just watching Ricky, it looks like success that he can duplicate, as long as he maintains that control. Its not like he has bad stuff, just nothing thats overpowering. But if you can locate a 90+ fastball where you want it, and also put your curveball where you want it, you're going to be damn hard to hit, and thats what Ricky has done. Scott worries me more, his stuff is bordering on the point where even with good control, which he's had, it still may not be enough. His fastball barely touches 90 anymore, and unlike some other crafty lefties, his changeup is pretty mediocre, and his slider hasn't looked so hot this year either. If I were to rank the guys on our staff in terms of stuff, it'd probably go Johnson/Volstad, Nolasco, Sanchez, Olsen. But its all about control, and who's got it going into the playoffs. Volstad has had 4 starts, u can't say he has the 2nd best stuff on the staff after that, Anibal is still one of our best pitchers along wit JJ and Ricky Stuff isn't about consistency or anything. Its how hard you throw, how much movement you have, and how nasty your offspeed pitches are. And in these areas, Volstad is excellent... good fastball, heavy sinker, reliable change. Anibal has a lot of nice breaking pitches but his fastball is pretty meh, and I think his curve hangs a bit too much. His best asset is his ability to control all of his pitches, and use any pitch at any time. In the end, your "stuff" is just a part of being a pitcher though, theres a lot more to it than that. If it were just about stuff, Burnett would have won 20 games by now.

August 6, 200817 yr I think it will be the new guys, JJ/Anibal/Volstad. Nolasco and Olsen seem too inconsistent for me. Wow I really don't know if anyone outside of Brandon Webb has been more consistent that Nolasco since he got his feet under him. He was rough at the very beginning but he was also rusty coming back from injury. I'd have to believe that he would at least start a game 3, with Johnson and maybe Anibal starting if he pitches well down the stretch. I won't count out Volstad either, rookies don't always perform poorly in the playoffs and Chris seems pretty cool, we'll have to see if he really performs well enough to warrant consideration or not. Olsen's stuff will look nice coming out of the pen. I really hope that Fredi wouldn't toss him in just because he has the most experience of our starting corps, his experience has just proved his mediocrity.
August 7, 200817 yr I never actually responded to this thread so here I go... 1. Nolasco: Ace of the team this year. 2. Johnson: Get's outs. 3. Olsen: Lefty flavor.

Um, I know you hate stats, but JJ is probably the worst at "getting outs". Meaning he allows more baserunners than the other pitchers, both this year and career wise.
