In their first personnel disclosure of the offseason, the Marlins confirmed they want to retain their third baseman and will offer him a multiyear contract. ''I spoke to [agent]Sam Levinson and told him something would be forthcoming as promised,'' general manager Admin Beinfest said. Lowell, who earned $3.7 million this past season, likely will seek a multiyear contract for at least $8 million annually after producing 32 home runs and 105 RBI. If he rejects the Marlins' offer, Lowell, 29, could opt for arbitration and become a free agent after next season. Under that scenario, the Marlins likely would look to trade him. Asked if he's optimistic about signing Lowell long-term, Beinfest said, ``I don't know. You never know until you start talks.'' Beinfest, who said he was awaiting payroll parameters from owner Jeffrey Loria, was noncommittal about offering multiyear deals to anybody else on the team's long list of arbitration-eligible players. ? Unless Ivan Rodriguez has a change of heart, forget that quaint notion of him taking less to re-sign with the Marlins. His agent, Scott Boras, told our Kevin Baxter on Tuesday, ``Pudge will consider giving the Marlins a hometown discount when the Marlins give a discount to people who live in Miami and buy tickets to the games.'' ? Marlins pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal said he believes pitcher A.J. Burnett will return to the majors from elbow surgery ''no later than two months into next season.'' Beinfest declined to say if Burnett will be offered arbitration. ''It's all part of how we're going to look at allocation [of money] for everybody,'' he said. ? The Marlins have sold more than 1,000 season tickets since winning the World Series. ? Former Marlins manager Jim Leyland rejected a chance to become manager of the Chicago White Sox before Marlins third-base coach Ozzie Guillen was hired this week. November 5, 200322 yr Mikey long term for 8 mil is not unreasonable to me considering he is our best "veteran" player and has been underpayed all these years.

I think it's safe to go six or more years for a Pujos or Cabrera, but not a Lowell, who is twenty-nine. But a 4-year $32 Million deal for Mike sounds perfectly fine to me.

November 5, 200322 yr hotcorner, make it a three year deal with club fourth year option and i will be happy. yeah, good idea Cape. come to think of it..... i guess stadium negotiations will affect contract talks too. if the FO knows for sure it's going to have to start sinking millions into the stadium, they might have to hold back on the big contracts. also if they're pretty confident of a stadium opening in 2007, will that cause them to sign certain players to 4-year deals to have them around for the opening year of a brand new stadium? why sign Lowell to a 3-year deal when you can get him for that extra 2007 year & assure he'll be at 3B to open up a new stadium? i think i'm probably getting carried away. Until we see differently, this FO works on short-term (& mostly one-year) contracts. Conine was signed for a couple of years, so maybe things are changing. I'd like to see something like Oakland does. Wrap up your pitchers & core players now while they're affordable to 3 or 4-year deals.
