Twins Release Luis Ayala

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 2 at 9:35am CST] The Twins released Luis Ayala after failing to trade him, according to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He was designated for assignment after struggling on the mound and failing to get along with manager Ron Gardenhire.

Ayala's name came up in trade talks with the Pirates, and there are indications that Eric Hinske was part of the discussions until he was dealt to the Yankees. Now that Ayala's a free agent he could sign on with one of the many teams seeking bullpen help, like the Rangers or Marlins.

Marlins FO will be all over this if the price isnt to much...

"The price" is roughly $210,000 so money won't be the issue. The Twins have to pick up the majority of his salary.

and hasn't this been mentioned in at least one other thread already? Consolidation anyone?

I would definitely give Ayala a look.

Title change, please.

This is BIG news?

Secondly, why do you people consistently cite MLB Trade Rumors.

Doubt that, his numbers arent that bad, and if he becomes that, then you just cut him. Simple

There is absolutely no chance of that happening. We traded a ranked starting prospect for a guy who was supposed to be "the guy" in the bullpen despite his poor track record, then we proceeded to keep him out there to lose hard-fought games much longer than he ever deserved. We're brining in this guy for almost nothing and I haven't seen anything to suggest that he is going to be anything more than a supplement, which I believe we need almost as much as we need a legitimate closer. Heck, part of the reason why I've felt we needed a closer is just because we can't afford the loss of one of our setup men by switching them to closer. If Ayala contributes to setup duties just a little bit, it will be a tremendous benefit, because right now our options there are more thin than they've been here since 2006.

I believe the Marlins were forced to eat a hefty portion of Julio's salary ($2-$3 million), which was the most offensive part of the deal. It wasn't so much an issue of the Marlins trading away Petit for Julio but more of an issue of the Marlins paying that much money for Julio despite the fact that his career numbers were not that good and there were other promising closers competing out of spring training. Beinfest pulled the trigger and you know the rest.

Fortunately, Ayala is coming cheap so the situations are not comparable.
