July 12, 200916 yr West’s next spot in the rotation had been slotted for July 20 in San Diego. One candidate to replace him is RHP Rick VandeHurk, who is 4-1 with a 2.96 ERA for Class AAA New Orleans. VandenHurk, who allowed two runs in seven innings to get the win in his last start July 8, is on the “bereavement list, according to New Orleans’ team web site. http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/2009/07/12/sean-west-agrees-with-his-double-a-demotion/
July 12, 200916 yr Im pretty sure I checked the J'Ville box score yesterday and Martinez pitched yesterday or at least recently so it won't be him. With the ASB it doesn't really matter when they pitched because there's 3 days off after tomorrow's game and we don't need an extra reliever for tomorrow. It can't be wood though since he was just called down as you noted.
July 12, 200916 yr really like his mental approach he did the best he could do and didn't get down on himself go back and improve ...... no point having him up taking a break during the ASB - let him go to jacksonville and get some work in - i think we could see him again to start August
July 12, 200916 yr West had a few really nice starts, and a some not so good starts. We certainly saw the potential he has, so hopefully he'll improve on some things in the minors. Hopefully whenever he gets another chance he'll be a more consistent pitcher. Considering his age and minor league experience, he fared ok in my opinion.
July 12, 200916 yr radio postgame: West wasn't scheduled to start for 9 days, Monday 7/20(AS break)....reliever will probably be called up.... Do we really need another reliever? well considering how much ABs De Aza and now Andy have gotten, do we really need another bench bat? I'd much rather have an extra reliever than an extra bench bat. The only thing I guess I'd make an exception for would be Hayes so you could PH for Paulino/Baker. One benefit of carrying Gonzalez is he does have some catching experience. So you really wouldn't need Hayes either, with Andy allowing Paulino/Baker to pinch hit. "Andy's out super utility guy,'' said manager Fredi Gonzalez. "He can play them all in the field, he can play the corner outfield and he can catch. ... So in emergency, he's our third catcher. www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/florida-marlins/sfl-andy-gonzalez-marlins-071009,0,4030055.story It's a moot point anyway. Whoever we call up will recieve minimal (if any) playing time before being replaced on the 20th.
July 12, 200916 yr Am I the only one who thinks that Burke Badenhop deserves a chance to start again? He pitches well nearly every time he gets the chance this year. I know the organization loves RVH and I kind of like to see him get an opportunity as well, but we've tried just about everything this year but give Badenhop a shot at a rotation spot and I can't believe some of the options we went to before we gave Badenhop a chance. The numbers showed West wasn't gonna be ready and it's really amazing that he was as useful as he was. Props to him for just getting the job done for a while but it's best for him to get back down to the minors and keep learning the art of pitching and working on command especially.

I like Badenhop in the pen. He's been very good there, so I don't want to mess with something that's working.

I don't think FO views Badenhop as a legitimate starter, so since he's doing well in what the view his future role with the ballclub being (long relief guy for the next 3+ years), they don't want to move him from that position. Personally I would like to see what he and Meyer has but I understand the point of keeping them in their roles (especially Meyer without another capable left handed arm in our pen).
July 12, 200916 yr West was okay while he was up here. Started to falter a little at the end, but overall, better than some of the other "spot" starters we have called up. Our pitching though has nosedived the past 3 games.

I think the situation with Meyer is much different. Meyer has thrived in a setup role and a situational lefty role and that is much more valuable. The team may not view Badenhop as a longterm starter, but they don't view Koronka & Taylor that way either. Personally, I haven't seen enough from RVH that he actually knows how to pitch and not just throw his nice stuff to consider him a legitimate starter.
