July 14, 200916 yr I don't see him doing .730 because he Ks too much, doesn't walk enough and doesn't hit the ball hard enough when he hits it. JP never walks but he doesn't K and hits a lot of line drives so he has being a .730 type in his career. I see Boni in the mid to high .600s at best. As a starting player, agreed. Amezaga's name has been thrown around as a comparable. He is Amezaga with more speed and a worse glove. But in general Amezagish. So, the Marlins should employ him like Amezaga. Don't drink the Bonifacio Kool Aid just because he's been streaking recently.
July 14, 200916 yr Amezaga could start for more than a few teams with his glove. I think our most efficient usage of him and coghlan after we trade uggla is coghlan at 2nd and boner as amezaga, but that's obviously not going to happen. If we have both in the lineup, that's gonna hurt, but we can get away with one playing second if we get a decent 3rd and are willing to take the hit to either our offense with boner in the lineup or our defense with coghlan. It's probably easier to get a Pedro Feliz type who is awesome with the glove and so so with the bat than get someone to make up fr boner's bat shortcomings, though.

I think it's possible he gets down to the 16% range against RHP. He has a career MILB K% against RHP at 16%, LHP at 23%. Since June 9th he's struck out 17.4%. I know what he does as a whole shows the better picture but for a guy starting in the league improvement is improvement. I mean, 16% is still far from juan pierre level. But, I mean, you look at 600 ABs with a .330 BABIP. The difference between 20% and 16% is a .263 AVG and a .276 AVG. Actually he hits more line drives than I thought. He's at 21% and his career BABIP is .323 and that's relatively high. The Ks are what kill him. The difference between the .263 and the .276 is about .030 OPS points, right? If he gets the Ks down and keeps hitting line drives he could be useful.

July 14, 200916 yr Why? Coghlan sucks vs lefties, Bonifacio isn't hitting righties, and Gaby is ready.
July 14, 200916 yr Why? Coghlan sucks vs lefties, Bonifacio isn't hitting righties, and Gaby is ready. Coghlan is struggling against lefties...Bonifacio doesn't, exactly, hit lefties (the sample isn't even 100 AB's against lefties). Not to mention we lose one of the better bats in our lineup. Where did Dan Uggla magically disappear off to? Don't fall in love with small samples.

The whole post was based on the assumption that Uggla is on another team, either this year or next and the fact that the FO loves Boni too much to just put him in the utility role.

We're going to be pretty bad offensively next year if that's the case then. After all with Uggla gone, everyone seems to want Hermida gone... It's a downgrade at 2B offensively, a bat at 3B that people question whether or not his bat even projects for a corner infielder at this level (and no, I don't consider Gaby a prospect anymore). Take Coghlan and Hermida away from the OF...you're left with Maybin (who's still unproven at this level...but you still have to trust him b/c he's one of your top-notch prospects), Cody in RF and ??? in LF. And Uggla better not be traded at the trade deadline if this team has a shot at playoff contention by the 31st.

He's always been a worse second half player and he just had his worst career first half.
July 14, 200916 yr Gaby Sanchez has a few things working against his prospect status: He turns 26 in a few months. He has very low power potential, especially for a corner infielder. His defense at 3rd base, where he would likely play, is simply awful.
July 15, 200916 yr He's still a prospect. Those things might affect how much of a prospect he is, but he's still most definitely a prospect.
July 15, 200916 yr He's still a prospect. Those things might affect how much of a prospect he is, but he's still most definitely a prospect. Technically. But there's some truth in Spike's post...specifically the part about him turning 26. This is the same board that calls our 25 year old RF'er who has actually performed at times at this level...a bust. Gaby's just a stopgap anyway, so no big deal.
July 15, 200916 yr Author I don't know at what age a guy would no longer be considered a "prospect" but 26 seems about right.
July 15, 200916 yr well, age is definitely not the only consideration in determining "prospect" status. certainly after 4+ years in the majors, Hermida is no longer a prospect by any measure. Gaby played college ball, which obviously puts him slightly behind schedule as far as MLB players go. but the Cog/Boni 2B platoon, Gaby at 3rd is a decent option, but I'd agree with Erick that is a bit of a "last resort" scenario for next season.
July 15, 200916 yr but the Cog/Boni 2B platoon, Gaby at 3rd is a decent option, but I'd agree with Erick that is a bit of a "last resort" scenario for next season. Why a last resort? The front office is infatuated with Bonifacio. This would be a great way to get Coghlan out of the outfield and limit Bonifacio's chances against RHP.

Actually, that's exactly why it's last resort, if anything. They're infatuated with Bonifacio...I'm pretty sure they have hopes for him as an everyday player (same with Coghlan, really).

Well it might be a last resort to the franchise. But to us as fans and in the interest of common sense, its best case scenario. The less we see of him vs RHP the better.
July 15, 200916 yr B/c our offense is already lacking in the power department. Seventh in the NL in homers is lacking? We're actually a very average power team.

Historically, he's been better against RHP than he has been against LHP.

He's better against RHP than he is LHP. Platooning him so he only faces LHP is exploiting his weakness. Unless you mean that in that we face a RHP 70% of the time, so we'd be cutting he's playing time by 70%.
