Dan Uggla's Problem- not hitting in front of Hanley

Featured Replies

Think about it. Does Dan Uggla need to hit in front of Hanley? He will get more pitches to hit then he does hitting towards the bottom part of the lienup and has the obp of a 2nd hitter. do you think that could explain the dip in his stats?

His dip in production is because he is pressing, not because of where he is hitting in the order.

i dont think so and i think you are just reaching there. it seems when he was hitting very well last year and years previous he was hitting in front of hanley and getting more to hit.

He's not stretching, you are. Especially since Uggla didn't hit in front of Hanley last year.

Well if you mean he stats are worse because he isn't hitting 2nd then your wrong because when he did hit 2nd from 2006- 2008 but Hanley was hitting Leadoff.

I don't really think it would matter right now because he seems to be missing or taking pitches that he used to hit out of the ball park but I would like to try him again in the 2 hole and move Bonifacio down to the 8th spot.

haha, damn i forgot. well wouldnt he benefit from hitting in front of hanley do you think? he would get more to hit.

I don't know whether it's true or not but I've thought for quite a while that separating the two (Hanley, then Uggla) has been part of Uggla's problem, that hitting him down in the lineup was a mistake. (As sort of an experiment) I've been hoping that for whatever reason they found themselves reunited with Cantu hitting behind Dan to see what happened.

edit: and I have no problem with Bonifacio hitting ninth, as we saw Pierre doing and obviously is happening in St. Louis.

Probably.

May I ask why in the hell you put a power guy in the two spot where the typical hitter is a contact/speed guy, and you put Maybin in the 5 spot, where that should be a POWER guy. Hell if anything put Baker second, considering he is the person in the lineup who actually had success batting 2nd.

because we dont have any contact/speed guys who should hit there and uggla needs to get heated up and hit in front of hanley. and hermida is in the 5 spot all the time now, and he does just fine there.

This.

If we had to use those players the best lineup would probably be.

Maybin

Coghlan/Baker

Hanley

Cantu

Uggla

Cody

Coghlan/Baker

Bonifacio

Nope we gotta have that speed at the top in boni. I think dan would benefit greatly hitting in front of Hanley, plus its not really helping boni hitting there.

I honestly don't think anything or anyone but a guy like Rudy Jamarillo can help Bonifacio.

that would be good too except move cody to 5, uggla to the 2nd spot, and put baker and cogs 6 and 7th. uggla would be much better in front of hanley imo.

Dan Uggla was an awesome hitter when he was thriving in the two hole and I always enjoyed that our lineup could come out and put a hurting on the opponent right away yet still had some oomph down the lineup. But Dan was taken out of the two hole because over his time as a major leaguer he has seen his ability to hit for average drop while he has maintained reasonable home run production. I'm not sure that we'd get the same results from Uggla if we were to put him in the two hole now.

This may be blasphemy, but as long as Bonifacio is in the lineup you want him to be near the top. Maybe he shouldn't be in the lineup at all, but he has turned a lot of hits into runs from first base just because he is probably the fastest guy in the majors.

Just because your "typical" #2 hitter is contact/speed doesn't mean you need to have contact speed.

This is something I was actually thinking of awhile ago. He's one of our best OBP guys (Hanley is #1, Baker is #2, and then a clusterf*** of coghlan/cantu/hermida/uggla are in inbetween .336-.340), he still puts up a high ISO, but his contact rates means he hurts us a lot in RISP positions...and you want your middle of the order bats to be RISP guys. The #2 spot is still an important spot for driving in runs, and his HR power will still help us a lot there, and it limits the damage his poor contact skills cost us.

By hitting #2 it's putting one of our best OBP guys at the top, his power still helps us at there, and his contact rates hurt us a lot less. Baker is still probably our best #2 hitter but I would put Uggla right behind him (With Hermida's downfall the past 2 months it's hard to make an arguement for him there anymore).

It wouldn't be ideal to me but I think something like

CC

Uggla

Hanley

Cantu

Baker

Cody

Hermida

Pitcher

Bonifacio

Could be effective.

This may be blasphemy, but as long as Bonifacio is in the lineup you want him to be near the top. Maybe he shouldn't be in the lineup at all, but he has turned a lot of hits into runs from first base just because he is probably the fastest guy in the majors.

That's why I really like him 9th. Having him 8th would be horrible, because then you just have the pitcher bunting behind him, wasting his speed. But hitting 9th would still put his speed infront of Hanley and co, but would limit the damage his OPS gives.

Not only that but with Hanley basically being our only real effective bat, I want every person ahead of him as possible, like LaRussa does for Pujols. He's special, he needs men on base. Having a pitcher hit 3 spots ahead of him limits the damage he can do. But being able to have Bonifacio, Coghlan, and something out of baker/hermida/uggla/maybin when he's up ahead of him allows him to have RBI chances like he's a clean up hitter, but gives him the more ABs that the 3 spot gives.

I agree though that he needs to be 1, 2, or 9. Fredi has said he's played with the idea of 9, but since it doesn't look like it'll come to be, that leaves him 1 or 2.

Although I guess for all my hatred of Baker hitting #8 when he has the second highest OBP and OPS against RHP for us, this kinda helps explain it. Puts him in a position to be driven in by Hanley. Just...far from ideal.

I don't think it matters whether Bonafacio bats first or eighth, as long as its for the San Diego Padres.

Because the contact/speed guy is a stain from the 60/70s when home runs were rare, stolen bases almost as rare, and teams stretched to manufacture runs.

We have a more dynamic offense. Time for us to use it. Bat our best players higher in the order.
