Posted July 29, 200915 yr In exchange for Tim Alderson and a Class AA prospect. I'll post a link in a minute, this report is coming to me via Twitter (credible source). UPDATE: The Giants acquired All-Star second baseman Freddy Sanchez after a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. All the team had to give up is one minor league player -- to be named later. That according to Sanchez's agent. The Pirates were in San Francisco for a three game series with the Giants that started Monday, but Sanchez did not play due to a sore left knee. Reports from the team’s website indicated that the Giants re-examined Sanchez's knee on Wednesday afternoon -- after having already performed an initial MRI on Monday, but wanted to take another look before agreeing to any deal. Sanchez, 31, won a National League batting title with the Pirates in 2006. He is a California native – born in Hollywood – and began his professional career with the Red Sox organization. http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/sports/Giants-Acquire-All-Star-Freddy-Sanchez.html
July 30, 200915 yr Wow, they gave up Alderson just for Sanchez? Even if they do win the wild card, I still don't think it was worth it.
July 30, 200915 yr Wow, STEAL for the Pirates. I was hoping we would trade Uggla for Alderson in the off season, but what ever.
July 30, 200915 yr This was actually a fairly good deal for the Bucs, but seriously they could have a team of all-star quality players if they could hold on to them. Sad day for Pirate fans, both of them  What a waste of a great ballpark

First off you left off Nate McClouth and Jason Kendall among those gone, there are others that given a chance could produce a team to contend in the NL Central. Second that really wasn't a shot at their attendance, but do the people of Pittsburgh care about baseball? Outside the stadium they sell Steelers and Penguins shirts, not pirates. I think its a great stadium and their fans deserve better than what they've gotten lately.

I think its a great stadium and their fans deserve better than what they've gotten lately. Jason Kendall is CRAP right now... what good would Jason Kendall do them now? With that team, they'd have a bloated payroll, no real minor league system or depth and a mediocre team... I really don't think people understand the Pittsburgh situation. As of 2006... their team was crap, their minors were crap... the organization was crap. They had no real tradeable resources, no depth and the financial resources of a midmarket team. The previous ownership kept slapping bandaids on that mess with token signings of has-beens and washed-ups like Matt Morris. A complete slash-and-burn "firesale" (because this isn't economically driven, by any means) is the only way to do this. They now have projectable, talented players that can grow together, rather than one or two pieces at a time. They're grooming a system and that Indian million dollar arm show gave them first dibs in that region should any prodigies pop up. They're essentially guaranteed high draft picks for the next couple years in the hands of a capable GM (Neal Huntington). Yes, the city of Pittsburgh has proven itself to have one of the better fanbases in North American sports, but they were cursed with crap-tastic management.
July 31, 200915 yr Trading such a top prospect for a run at the wild card isn't that smart of a move but there's no denying there offense will be better with the additions of Garko and Sanchez.
July 31, 200915 yr Add Gorzelanny and Grabow to the list of players with tickets out of pittsburgh, dealt to Cubs for Kevin Hart and Jose Ascanio.
