Fredi Gonzalez won it for the Astros tonight

It is obvious Boni has been playing better since we traded for NJ. He's had his share of struggles this season, but I think it is possible he's turned a corner. Give the guy more time. Geez. Some people have so much hate in them.

I hope this isn't directed towards me. I don't hate anyone. Hell, I was just defending him in another thread because someone said he had no positives.

I'm just being realistic. There is literally a point in every month where someone says "Bonifacio is improving" and then he just regresses back to his mean. I'm not saying he's a useless player, I'm not saying he can never be better, I'm just point out the truth.

No, it was directed at all the unreasonable posters who just hate the guy. My point is that we seriously have not seen enough of Boni to make an educated call on the guy. I will agree with the FO when they say it normally takes about 1000 at bats to know what kind of hitter you have. Hanley was a beast after 1000 at bats. Same for Miguel. Boni is about 500 at bats away from showing us what he's made of. I would wait to make a final call on Boni until probably the middle of 2010. If he's not cutting it by then then there's your answer.

You can certainly second guess, but unless my eyes deceive me, since Boni has been relegated to the bench, he has come through a lot more often. Like the hit last week in extra that didnt work because Bo sends Hermida with no chance (even though he slid under the tag). Or the 3 hit afternoon the other day. Actually, watching Cecil Cooper manage lets you see what a real bad manager is. Last week, intentional walk to get to Hanley. Last night, burning his lefty reliever to come in and basically intentionally walk Hermida to get to the pitchers spot only to see a pinch hitter come in, obviously, and have to make another call to the pen. Can't hate on last night.

Boni has almost 700 career PA. We're going to be cutting it close there going into next June if he gets any real PT.

Also, you don't always have to wait that long. There is a reason scouts project players. Going by his 692 PA in the bigs and his 2855 PA in the minors I just don't know what I can envision him becoming besides Amezaga (and most scouts agree). He lacks pitch recognition and zone awareness and that last one is really hard to learn.

I agree with most of the thoughts of the original poster.

1) Hitting G. Sanchez in that situation was a mistake. It was a good spot for Helms, esp. when you consider who was pitching for the Astros. Yes, you can think ahead to the late innings to use Helms. But if you are really thinking ahead, you have to consider that Helms would have to face a set up man or closer for Houston that throws faster than his bat. Helms has been good this year, against normal 92 mph stuff. The 96-98 stuff, he just waves at.

2) Putting Pinto in a game is NEVER a good idea. I don't care what his ERA is or was, I feel that the Marlins are putting any game in jeopardy by including Pinto in it. How many of you whispered "Uh oh" to yourself when Pinto came into the game? How many just hollered "Aw ****!"

3) I don't care if Hanley is the best hitter in the world. Down a run with a runner on second and no one out, you move him over. That's especially true with Cantu, Baker, Uggla and Cody all hitting.

4) A hit and run with Bonifacio at the plate? You just can't do that.

All that said, the game ball goes to Bourn. Fantastic. And we shouldn't discount the fact that Carlos Lee caught two balls against the fence that were hit just as well and far as the two that Coghlan missed. I really like Coghlan, but lack of familiarity with that left field fence really hurt last night.

Probably because his acquisition has hurt the team more than anything else, and if we wind up only 2-3 games out, its hard to imagine us not having won 2-3 more games earlier in the year with an actual competent third basemen.

Absolutely. I was thinking this last night as I was watching the game.

God I couldn't agree with any of this less. (Except for the CC part) And I love that you don't even try to look at anyone else's posts or else you would have seen that Boni is one of the best players on the team at making contact.

Take this from one of the forum's Fredi Bash Brothers: the only thing he did that was a bit irritating was hitting Sanchez who has no stats at this level over Helms with the bases loaded. However, it's not like Helms is good with the bases loaded. Career .210 .248 .407 .655. Gaby was hitting .301 .398 .458 .856 with RISP in AAA.

Fredi wanted to save Helms for later in the game. It's understandable.

I agree here. It's crippling when your bench is so short. 1 guy injured, 1 guy has zero experience, 1 guy is your backup catcher and you absolutely cannot burn him this early. Your best PH for this spot was forced to start, and he didn't really have a better option available.

Boo yourself. Not everyone is one of the best players in all of baseball.
