Valentine isn't coming to Florida. It's just a rumor. Fredi is staying. He did a decent job with the payroll, etc. The FO has done a decent job. Loria should be pissed at himself and the fan base for not showing up for games so the payroll is higher. Loria is rich enough to afford a 60 million dollar payroll. And more fans could show up. Those are the two problems.

 

 

Tried that and it didn't work. The team is taking the "once bitten..." approach, and I can't blame them a bit. The "income will determine payroll" approach may not be the fans' preferred way of doing things, but it is a biz. If the fans want better TV viewing in an unrealistic format, change the channel to the Disney Channel.

 

That said (or spewed, depending on one's point of view), I stick by my theory that payroll is going to increase over the next few years because season ticket packages are on the rise. Everyone I have talked to has already renewed for 2010. That is a solid base to judge how payroll will be. More so than the walk up crowds or if attendance rose the previous season. The FO is already getting an overview of what is going to happen in 2011 from the current season ticket base by the deal they gave us. That's $$$ in the bank for them. Speculating on what the income will be in 2011 because of the "significant rise" in season ticket packages so the procrastinating fans can be seen in the new pond shouldn't be all that difficult.

 

Now to keep it relevant to the thread title, I agree with 2003. It dosen't make financial sense. There are alot of other reasons why I am disregarding this rumor as poor journalism, but that tops the list.

I think the NBC Miami piece that Marlins2003 posted is legitimate, albeit poorly researched and poorly written.

 

There is no guarantee that Fredi will be axed, but using the Girardi situation as a precedent and Loria's overall reputation, I think it's safe to assume that these rumors contain a high degree of accuracy.

 

I'm not a huge fan of Fredi Gonzalez but I think this is a disgraceful way to be running an organization.

 

 

If they spent their time responding to rumors they wouldn't have time to get other things done. And it dosen't set a good precence. I'm sure Fredi and the FO have at least talked. Or because of previous talks they are all on the same page without direct communications. Keeping it in the orginization is the way to do things, IMO.

I think you need to judge a performance based on the decisions made and not "our payroll was low blah blah.". With a better manager we would have won more games. I want someone to tell me I'm wrong. We won this many games because the marlins players are talented, not because fredi made hanley Or anyone perform better than they are. Fredi made some good decisions but I think the overall feeling is that he missmanaged the bullpen and sp while making too many BIG ingame mistakes.

 

I say let him go if we have a better replacement. He's going to be gone in 2 yrs anyways.

since so many decisions regarding the team and the direction it takes moving forward involve the manager's input on a wide range of things you would think any decision on fredi's fate should come early in the organizational meeting not at the end.

 

also Kirkjian had an interesting take/rumor/thought (can't quite figure out his context - hear it yourself at link below) that Gonzalez may have been heard thinking out loud about the Atlanta job which irked some people.

Taking the aggregate (run differential) of the entire season as a broad means of performance evaluation, I think it can be argued that the Marlins' final record far exceeded actual performance on the field.

 

However, one could also argue that the offense was that good and the starting pitching was that bad.

 

By my own assessment of the talent (and I admit I am a pessimist) I never once thought that this was a playoff caliber team. The starting pitching just wasn't there and there was too much uncertainty in the line-up. If the Marlins ended the Bonifacio experiment early I might have thought differently.

I wasn't referring to their silence over the rumors at all. In fact, I agree with you.

 

I was referring to their mentality in blaming Fredi Gonzalez for a $37 million team not making the playoffs. Sorry if this wasn't clear.
