I still like Cantu...

I'd like Nick Johnson back a little more, but we all knew that wasn't going to happen with the ownership that runs this team.

Always frustrating to think where this team could be with an extra $10-15 million to work with.

Good to hear, I suppose. If we're still looking at a $36MM payroll, though, and they intend to keep Cantu and Lindstrom and Nunez while giving Gload a Helms-type-deal, then bleh.

Keeping Cantu is basically saying "we are spending at least $40." Unless they do something retarded like trade JJ. Which is highly doubtful. Here's a mock

C John Baker $415,000

1B Gaby Sanchez $405,000

2B Chris Coghlan $410,000

3B Jorge Cantu $6,000,000

SS Hanley Ramirez $7,000,000

LF Cody Ross $4,200,000

CF Cameron Maybin $405,000

RF Brett Carroll $415,000

B Emilio Bonifacio $415,000

B Wes Helms $950,000

B Ronny Paulino $900,000

B Ross Gload $1,000,000

B “Veteran 1B/LF/BAT $1,000,000

SP Josh Johnson $5,000,000

SP Ricky Nolasco $4,250,000

SP Andrew Miller $2,000,000

SP Chris Volstad $415,000

SP Anibal Sanchez $1,200,000

RP Matt Lindstrom $1,650,000

RP Reynel Pinto $850,000

RP Dan Meyer $415,000

RP Rick Vanden Hurk $415,000

RP Brian Sanches $415,000

RP Burke Badenhop $415,000

RP Tim Wood $415,000

$40,955,000

According to "the media," JJ and Cantu will be $500-1 million cheaper than this (despite the fact of Wainwright, Lester, Greinke.... Blake, G. Atkins, etc comparables), so this is in essence a $40 million team once the random ups/downs of contract tenders happen. Even subbing out Pinto for H. Jones (who we got for Hermida), saves $400,000+ bucks to get that number to "40."

Notice West, Morrison, B. Petersen, Tucker, and others are in AAA. And we will have added a few more significant pieces with Uggla and Leo Nunez in this scenario.

Love having those guys a year before free agency. I don't think he's going to pull an "Adrian Beltre," but I suspect he is better than 2009 (i.e. wrist injury) and hits over an .800 OPS. Hopefully enough to get him to Type A compensation and to where he will get a 4 year contract else where so we can accept the arbitration and take the draft picks.

wouldn't shock me. I mean even with the power loss/injury he still hit 40+ doubles, and though he'll never walk a lot his walk & strikeout rates have steadily improved over the years.
