The Marlins could certainly use some power from the left side of the plate ... they have none. Are there any other teams competely devoid of leftside power?

Well if you put Morrison on 1st base that resolves the matter

I wonder how much Rick Ankiel would cost? If they can get him on a cheap 1 year deal, I'd put him in left and move Coghlan to 2nd. He's from South Florida and coming off a down year. Just a thought.

BTW Peterson also bats lefty and he can probably match Hermida's HR output if he wins the LF job in ST. It may actually come down to a battle between Cousin and Peterson unless a F/A is signed

We're going to need someone from outside the organization that has 20 HR pop and can play 1B/LF to help out Gaby and Carroll. Longterm, we should be alright with Morrison, Skipworth, and Cousins all having projectable 25+ pop. But we need something out there more than Petersen (who wouldn't match Hermida's "power" output even if he is a similar overall hitter) or a young Morrison who hasn't grown into his power yet.

I was just considering that Hermida's HR output was way down I just think Peterson could hit 15 HRs per year...Cousin should be good for 20 HRs per year consistently

Just wondering out loud what Coghlan could do if not this season perhaps the next or the year after. He really never had a season like he did this in the minors so with more experience and perhaps a few pounds can he start banging 15-20 at some point down the road. If he doesn't it's not the end of the world but who knows what he's capable of (and no I'm not going to fixate on 2009 as a benchmark for his future success) as his career progresses.

Ankiel kind of sucks, to be kind. He has no plate discipline, can only hit fastballs, and watching him swing at off speed and breaking pitches is painful to watch.

not to mention that scott boras is his agent. boras will be comparing ankiel to babe ruth and ask for 15 million per year

Hermida finished with just a .133 ISO. It would not be controversial really to say that Petersen could match that.

It's unlikely Petersen will match Hermida's HR power but Hermida had just 16 doubles plus triples.

I read it to mean HR power. I did say,

Yea, same overall hitter, but power? If ISO is what we're arguing, no problems. Hermida really tanked there.

Outside the org is probably the key. For a full time 1B.

I really don't care whether a hitter is right handed or left handed, I care whether or not he can hit. If the team seems fit to add a hitter, that's fine, but I see no reason to bring in a left handed guy just to have a left handed guy around if they are right handers who are better hitters going for the same price.

While in general I agree, and first and foremost the point is to get guys who can hit.

But, for instance, let's say you have a line up for all Cody Ross's. You'll finish with a good team OPS. But you won't score much against RHP while absolutely dominating games against LHP.

But replace 4 of those Cody's with 4 LHBs and things will normalize.

It's also a thing because you'll face a lot more RHP in a season than LHP. I'd imagine a line up of 8 LHB Cody Ross's will do better over a full season than a line up of 8 RHB Cody Ross's.

It's certainly a secondary factor but we are heavily RHP dependent. Right now we only have Cogs and Baker.

I'd never say that. I have always noted that there are much more RHP in the game than there are lefties. This obviously gives a tremendous advantage to lefties. Thats why when you look at the overall numbers, regardless of splits, if a lefty starting everyday performs worse than a righty starting every day, I put much more stock in the righty.

If a team were too lefty heavy, then I would worry because they could easily get eaten up by a LHP because for a variety of reasons most lefties have a tougher time hitting lefties than righties do righties. I think a lot has to do with the fact that most right handed batters grow up facing 90-95 percent righties until they get to much higher levels.

IMHO, there are too many guys brought into organizations just because of which side of the plate they hit from. Being left-handed doesn't mean that you are going to have an innate ability to outhit every righty against RHP, it just means that you have an advantage and probably hit better against righties than lefties. So at the end of the day, you have to take each hitter for what he is worth in production, which in a sport like baseball can be measured and defined in an endless number of ways.

To summarize, don't bring in a lefty just because his lefty, unless the numbers show that he is better at hitting right handed pitching than other available players.
