Failed starters then to make good relievers like Eric Gagne, Jose Mesa, LaTroy Hawkins and many, many more. That is where I think Vanden Hurk could really excel if the Marlins give him the chance. I don't like him much as a starter.

Yeah even though he's young I feel he should be in the Long Relief/spot starter role with Badenhop being a more used Mid reliever and occasional spot starter.

Not really.

And RVH has pitched 154.1 innings in the past 3 years. Is it because he's been injured like Ani? No, it's been because he's been terrible as a starter.

 

You can't compare the two. VandenHurk has barely pitched because he struggled as a young SP. At least we can count on him and his potential. Sanchez, on the other hand, has barely pitched because he's always injured. And his injury is serious. It isn't an injury many pitchers can come back from so easily.

 

Give me Rick Vandenhurk any day of the week.

I don't think you're alone in thinking he has the potential but I think more people are skeptical of him reaching that potential.

The last time Ani was much, much better than Rick was 2006, 4 years ago. That was before his injury, too. Now, I don't think Ani is even better than Rick. Sure, he had a 3.87 this past season, but he had a 1.51 WHIP. All he is right now is a pitcher who's trying to stay healthy.

toally agree. also anibal looked pretty good in september and october. he had like a sub 3 ERA and seemed to feel more confident with his arm.

We had this whole debate about VandenHurk a while back. I think the general consensus is that he could be a very good Burke Badenhop kind of player, and it seems that is where he fits best. He throws way too many pitches in such a short time to be a consistant starter. His stuff is there, his control and ability to pin point the ball in the strike zone isn't. MMP is right, he's always been that guy who goes 3 flawless innings, but his pitch count doesn't allow him to go any further.

 

Anibal has a proven track record, his 2006 season was outstanding, and the end of this season was pretty damn impressive.

Volstad

Miller/West (whoever wins this battle in spring training wins the one lefty spot in the rotation)

I believe VandenHurk will be the emergency starter, or the guy who will come in and start when/if one of Volstad/Miller/West/Sanchez falters (which is very likely to happen). However, he needs a lot of work to ever become a consistant regular in any major league teams rotation.

He pitched really well out of the pen. His problem has always been going into the later innings. In their 3rd PA of a game, opposing hitters have a 1.085 OPS against him. If you really look at the splits, it's pretty clear that Ani has been the better pitcher.

Right now, I guess Sanchez is better. But he is just too injury prone. I can't trust a pitcher with his type of injury.
