January 23, 201016 yr i see washington put him on the block... does a return make sense? is it possible? i know they are shopping for a second basemen... thoughts?
January 23, 201016 yr Uggla for Willingham straight up? No. But if they would include some real prospects, then maybe.
January 23, 201016 yr Uggla figures to be a 3 win player, where Willingham is closer to a 2 win player. Marginal wins are more valuable to a competing team.
January 23, 201016 yr Author i have no idea what that means. all i know is cog moves to his natural position and we get the obp guy everyone wants
January 23, 201016 yr Uggla = 3 wins Willingham = 2 wins 1 win = a lot because the Marlins figure to compete this year, and 1 win can be the difference of making the playoffs or not. And I don't think Coghlan would have first shot at 2B if Uggla were to depart. I don't think the organization sees Coghlan as a major league 2B.
January 23, 201016 yr Of course I doubt it would have any possibility of occurring, but to answer your question, I wouldn't do it. Willingham is going to be 31 this upcoming season, and has had injury problems in the past, unlike Uggla. Not to mention that Uggla is a more valuable player in general anyway.
January 23, 201016 yr No, the kind of production you get from Uggla at 2nd base is what makes him extremely valuable.
January 23, 201016 yr Production aside, Uggla will play in more games than Hammer during the course of a season, giving Hammer's refuasal to get back surgery.
January 23, 201016 yr Absolutely no sense in this idea. I would rather have Uggla every day of the week.
January 23, 201016 yr I must agree with the sentiment that one would rather have Uggla over The Hammer, if due to nothing but Willingham's injury issues.
January 23, 201016 yr No way I would make that trade. Now if the Nationals want to deal John Lannan maybe the Marlins would talk to them.
January 23, 201016 yr No way I would make that trade. Now if the Nationals want to deal John Lannan maybe the Marlins would talk to them. Nah, the Nats have high hopes for Lannan, and we are stacked with SP potential so we don't exactly need him.
January 23, 201016 yr The last thing we are stacked with is SP potential. Yeah, this. More SP is virtually always good.
January 23, 201016 yr I wouldn't do it unless Washington has some good prospects to add to the deal. Uggla is valuable at 2B because of his power. I like Willingham but his back could go out any second.
January 23, 201016 yr The last thing we are stacked with is SP potential. I disagree. We have a lot of young pitchers full of potential. JJ and Ricky have the #'s 1 and 2 spots locked up. #'s 3-5 are going between Chris Volstad, Sean West, Andrew Miller, Anibal Sanchez, Rick Vandenhurk, and Hayden Penn I am not saying that I wouldn't want Lannan, because I would take him in a heartbeat. But if we traded Uggla, we would need to get some type of power back. So Uggla for Lannan + prospects would not cut it for me.
January 24, 201016 yr I would rather move Uggla to LF and keep him than trade for Willingham. Now, like it's been said, if they threw in some strong prospects to sweeten the deal, I'd listen...

Volstad was pretty bad last year. West still has major control issues. Miller is all over the place a lot of the time. Anibal has had a torn labrum and is going to always be a major risk. RVH is still unpolished. Penn has sucked most of the time, and was even lit up in AAA for a while. Sure, they all have some level of potential, but depending on getting 3 good starters out that mix, while certainly possible, still makes me anxious. If we somehow develop 6+ ML quality starting pitchers, we can always trade one. Bundling up as many as possible is a good idea. Also, Ricky may be a free agent in a couple of years, and that will leave us with 4 "holes" behind JJ.

Anibal Sanchez is to injury prone, and I don't even know why you mentioned Hayden Penn. 4 pitchers isn't going to cut it. Especially when all of them are up with the Marlins struggling.

January 24, 201016 yr BTW, I mentioned Hayden Penn because the FO always seems to sprinkle his name in the discussion. I don't know why, because he was absolutely horrible last year. And I would take RVH over Anibal. RVH is rapidly improving and Bert Blyleven has taken him under his wing. And the last time I checked, he had about a 1.80 ERA in the Winter Leagues. I think RVH will develop nicely into a 4th or 5th SP.
January 24, 201016 yr I hate to break it to you but the Winter League are not the Major Leagues. If John Lannan were on the Marlins he would be the #3 starter without a doubt. Without running down the list of potential starting pitchers for the Marlins the only one that I'm confident will have a good year from start to finish is Josh Johnson. That being said I still prefer that the Marlins keep Uggla. But, if the Nationals offered Lannan even if it was straight up the Marlins would be smart to at least consider it.
January 24, 201016 yr I think this argument got off track. My argument was never that the Marlins dont need or couldn't use Lannan. It was that Uggla for Lannan + prospects would be a bad deal because we would need to get some power back. We have potential SP's but we don't have any power bats with 30+ HR potential. With that being said, I would love to have Lannan. He reminds me of a (way) better Scott Olsen. He doesn't throw very hard but he is consistant and a durable pitcher.

Is it because he's been injured like Ani? No, it's been because he's been terrible as a starter.
