November 14, 200322 yr Update 11/15/03 Possible trade details: The Orioles' offer includes young left-hander Matt Riley, the source said, with either second baseman Jerry Hairston or middle infielder Brian Roberts possibly in the package as well. The Marlins could also ask for lefty reliever B.J. Ryan or ask for one of their pitching prospects from the Conine deal - Denny Bautista or Don Levinski From the Baltimore Sun: Source: O's make offer for Marlins' Lee Payroll problems make Florida prime player in offseason trade market -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- By Joe Christensen Sun Staff Originally published November 14, 2003 PHOENIX - The Orioles have money to spend. The Florida Marlins have payroll to trim. That could turn the two teams into trade partners again this offseason, and yesterday major league sources said the Orioles were targeting Marlins first baseman Derrek Lee. Late last night, in fact, one major league source gave indications that the Orioles had made an offer for Lee and were waiting to hear back from the Marlins before leaving the general manager meetings today. Orioles vice presidents Jim Beattie and Mike Flanagan would not discuss their specific dealings with clubs this week, but industry sources said the Orioles made multiple offers to teams looking to slash payroll. The Milwaukee Brewers are trying to trim next year's payroll from $40 million to $30 million, and they have been shopping power hitting first baseman Richie Sexson. The Orioles had discussions with the Brewers early in the week, but those talks stalled, and by last night, Lee seemed to be the more likely trade target. Sexson hit 45 home runs last season, but he is under contract for $8.6 million next season in his final year before free agency. A report in yesterday's South Florida Sun Sentinel indicated that the world champion Marlins have serious payroll concerns and could be forced to bring back a team with a $60 million payroll next season, with $11 million of that tied up in deferred payments. Lee, who won the National League Gold Glove Award at first base this year, is eligible for salary arbitration and could earn about $7 million next season. He hit .291 this season with 31 home runs and 113 RBIs, and most scouts feel his power production would greatly increase at a hitter-friendly park such as Camden Yards. The Arizona Diamondbacks, San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles also were searching for first base help this week, putting them in the running for Sexson and Lee. At midseason, the Orioles and Marlins talked about swapping first basemen - Lee for Jeff Conine - and Conine eventually went to Florida for pitching prospects Denny Bautista and Don Levinski. Beattie and Flanagan have said adding offense is their top priority this offseason, and first base is one position they're hoping to upgrade. David Segui is still under contract for one more season at $7 million, but with his history of injury problems, he isn't being counted on to be a regular next season - at first base or designated hitter, according to Beattie. "I don't think we can count on that necessarily," Beattie said. "We hope he's healthy, and anything he does is a plus. But injuries are a fact of life, and we all have to be prepared for the alternative." no specific players were discussed in the article for Lee but i would imagine that it would include Denny bautista....i had that he was going to be are next young dominating power pitcher
November 14, 200322 yr I had posted this on another topic but I thought I'd repost here: I don't like this deal. Patterson hasn't recovered from arm surgery, Spivey could have been a one year wonder, Andrew Good is Kevin Olsen and we have enough of those pitchers down on the farm and LHP Chris Capuano is coming off arm surgery in 2002 I believe, he's a mystery right now. In my opinion too many question marks with all the players coming in the deal from Arizona. I would ask for Lyle Overbay or Jesus Cota a couple of 1B who would be expendable. I know we have Stokes but you try to get as much talent as you can and then make it work. Oscar Villarreal for the bullpen. He pitched very well against us last year. I would try to get LHP Mike Gosling. This guy is ready for the ML but if they trade Schilling I doubt he goes anywhere. Spivey and Capuano in the end I would mind BUT either Villarreal or even Gosling would have to be included As far as the O's 2B Brian Roberts , LHP BJ Ryan, and Daniel Cabrera would do or ask for Denny back in the deal or go for it, ask for RHP John Maine a stud in the making *Here's a nugget, The Braves were calling Florida about Redman and rumor has it they are also interested in Encarnacion. The latter I don't know but the Redman thing is a fact. Also The Marlins were talking to Expos about...I don't know. We all know how much the Fish like talking trade with the Spos The Marlins have options its just a matter of trying to make the chemistry work and the public trusting the organization with what its doing.
November 14, 200322 yr I am not thrilled with a Spivey for Lee deal here either. Mostly because we could get equal talent on the FA market for same price. For the O's deal for Lee, fascinating. I love the idea of getting Bautista back - but I like the idea that was suggested by Marlin2003 of including Gibbons in the deal too. I dont know how likely that is, since the article says the O's main priority is adding offense. Marlins talk to Expos? I dont know why - Vlad is a FA. Maybe Vazquez? Rumor is that Expos have to deal him too.
November 14, 200322 yr Maybe Vazquez? Rumor is that Expos have to deal him too. We really don't have a need or room for Vazquez though even if he's a top young arm.
November 14, 200322 yr He hit .291 this season with 31 home runs and 113 RBIs LMAO... those aren't DLee's stats...
November 14, 200322 yr He hit .291 this season with 31 home runs and 113 RBIs LMAO... those aren't DLee's stats... :lol .271 31 homers 92 RBI would be the right stats.

November 14, 200322 yr but I like the idea that was suggested by Marlin2003 of including Gibbons in the deal too. The Marlins are looking for young talent at a low price. That IS Jay Gibbons. I would be willing to deal Lee for Gibbons and a prospect. Gibbons could be a potential .290-.300 hitter at the Pro, due to the huge gaps. Not to mention he's a lefty. If we got Gibbons, it would also allow us to trade Encarnacion for pitching.
November 14, 200322 yr If the Marlins can get Bautista back, wouldnt that get Pedro wanting to come down here. I remember Ed sayin something about The Marlins being one of the top teams on his list for when he comes out in FA after this upcoming season when we did have bautista. I know it might be Farfetched? but Pedro (even at his age), Beckett, Burnett, Bautista, Penny. That Rotation would dominate.

If our current rotation can stay healthy, we would be the best rotation in the majors.
November 14, 200322 yr Pedro is the last thing that this team needs. WTF? Pedro is the one thing every team needs: Dominant pitching.
November 14, 200322 yr Pedro is the last thing that this team needs. WTF? Pedro is the one thing every team needs: Dominant pitching. a little too much money
November 14, 200322 yr Pedro is the last thing that this team needs. WTF? Pedro is the one thing every team needs: Dominant pitching. a little too much money exactly . . .
November 14, 200322 yr Pedro is the last thing that this team needs. WTF? Pedro is the one thing every team needs: Dominant pitching. Pedro + Bad Attitude + Cry Baby + Needs to much consideration and baby sitting + Transform into Armando Almanza after 100 pitches We don't need that aggravation for 10+ millions a year
November 14, 200322 yr again why would Gibbons be traded? Lee is much more productive (respectively), plays better defense, gives you more speed, and is only 2 years older. Why not?
November 14, 200322 yr Pedro is the last thing that this team needs. WTF? Pedro is the one thing every team needs: Dominant pitching. a little too much money Well that's obvious. I was speaking as if it were actualy possible (money factor not included).
November 14, 200322 yr really? Jay Gibbons had a pretty good season in a pretty weak lineup The Marlins weren't exactly obsolite with the bats this year, either.
November 14, 200322 yr really? Jay Gibbons had a pretty good season in a pretty weak lineup The Marlins weren't exactly obsolite with the bats this year, either. what are you saying?
November 14, 200322 yr Derek Lee and Juan Encarnacion for Gibbons, Bautista, and good young starter. That would be a good deal. The o's need offense and we need to get rid of lee and juan for cheaper players.
November 15, 200322 yr I know there have been many rumors regarding Luis Castillo and other teams, but the distance between him and available second basemen is so great that we must resign him. Spivey is a decent replacement, but not exactly needed. The Orioles offer on the otherhand I take interest in. Though it sounds like a scam, basically Lee (and a prospect) for Conine. Jeff's been my favorite player while on the Marlins and Orioles (btw, my hometown team and modest fan of), but that's a bit much for the Marlins to give up. Of the Marlins' farm system we are lacking young arms and outfielders. The Orioles have a glut of young outfielders that have broken through this year: Bigbie, Gibbons, Matos, Mora, Raines, and Cust fast on their heels. They wouldn't need or want a Encarnacion. In fact the only reason they are talking about Vlady is because Angelos has shown he's willing to spend but hasn't recently, and a big name would bring the 2 or 3 thousand that haven't been selling out the stadium every night like they were in the past. Maybe we can talk them into giving up Admin Bigbie or Tim Raines, Jr.
