Florida Marlins call up Palm Beach Gardens native Hunter Jones

by Joe Capozzi Left-hander Hunter Jones will join the Marlins today but his stay could be a short one.

Jones, who grew up in Palm Beach Gardens, was called up from Class AAA New Orleans to take the spot of Clay Hensley, who is headed to the bereavement list following the unexpected death of his father on Friday.

Jones came to the Marlins over the in winter from the Red Sox in the Jeremy Hermida trade. He’s 0-1 with a 3.22 ERA in four starts four New Orleans. He has struck out 15 and walked eight in 22 1/3 innings.

Jones. 26, made 11 appearances for the Red Sox in 2009. He allowed 13 runs in 12 2/3 innings (9.24), with seven walks and nine strikeouts.

He gives the Marlins a second lefty in the bullpen, along with Renyel Pinto.

The death of Hensley’s father is the latest emotional toll on the Marlins. Closer Leo Nunez’s grandmother died three days ago, and assistant trainer Mike Kozak’s mother passed away last weekend while the Marlins were in Colorado.

By the way does anyone know if Loria is going to Hensley's fathers funeral ? Samson at the very least should go, and I would guess Beinfest too.

Most likely what they will do is what I do when an employee has a close family member pass away. Send a $$$ contribution to the family to do with as they see fit, and/or a floral arrangement. I believe that is the proper etiquet.
