September Call-ups

Recommended Posts

The 40 man roster is currently 38/40 and we could move Coghlan to the 60 day DL to make open up another spot for 3 additions. Osvaldo Martinez will be Rule V draft eligible this off season, so I think he'll be added to the 40 man and called up. Our only other eligibles of significance are all middling relief pitchers, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was the only one added to the 40.*

Then looking at the 40 man roster: http://florida.marli...an.jsp?c_id=fla

There are only 3 position players on the 40 man (BC, Petersen, and Cousins). BC is injured, Petersen is a shoe-in, and I imagine Cousins is called up for added depth. So that's three (Martinez, Cousins, Petersen).

I imagine Marinez, Ceda, and Leroux are locks since they have a future in our pen, while Wood, Buente, and Sink are all mediocre and might be DFA fodder after the season. Tucker is far from ready, and Tank will possibly be Super 2 eligible if he plays all of September (So he'll likely miss the first week or two, but then be added for more lefty depth).

So I think we see Martinez, Cousins, Petersen, Marinez, Ceda, Leroux, and later Tank.

It will be interesting to see if they do anything with Elih or Koehler though. Neither are rule V eligible until NEXT offseason, so they can be kept off the 40 man for one more year. But our class next year is a lot more deep, so maybe the FO adds them a year earlier (especially since they don't have much left to prove in the minors) and see if they are worth the roster spots.

*A more indepth look at our Rule V eligibles:

SS Osvaldo Martinez

RP Garrett Parcell

RP Steven Cishek

RP Arquimedes Caminero

RP Ramon Benjamin

SP Sandy Rosario

LF John Raynor

RP Kris Harvey

SP Graham Taylor

SP Kyle Winters

RP AJ Battisto

OF Brandon Tripp

SP Jeff Allison and RP Todd Doolittle are also MILB FAs, so they would have to be added to the 40 man to keep them from filing, but both should be easy re-signs and neither are likely worth a 40 man roster spot

I'd like to correct myself since I hate posting bad information:

Turns out that Tankersley filed a grievance after 2009 because the Marlins optioned him when he was injured (Which is illegal to do).

You might remember a similar situation with Anibal Sanchez back in '07, which did get media attention. Anibal won, which meant he was award the ML service time he missed from being optioned to the minors all of '07 (That meant be compensated the increase of minor league salary compared to major league salary, as well as bringing him closer to arbitration/free agency).

Tank also won his, which meant an option was not used in 2009. However, that also means Tank's service time was more than we were led to believe. If Tankersley was awarded the full year of service time, he'd have been arbitration eligible and non-tendered by the Marlins. So as part of the agreement, Tankersley only obtained as much service time he could obtain while still not being arbitration eligible. Meaning that, regardless of when they call him up in September, he will be arbitration eligible this off season.

Why these kind of things don't actually get media attention is rather meh to me. Especially since the media down there seems to love any story that shines the Marlins in a negative light.

They might have not seen/heard the issue. Also, Tank didn't throw a no-hitter, so it may have been more of a "whatever" sort of issue with our best friends, the media.
