Posted October 13, 201014 yr Rotoworld: Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker passes along a Sponichi report that the Diamondbacks are preparing $80 million to acquire Japanese right-hander Yu Darvish. According to Newman, it's unclear whether the amount consists solely of the posting fee or the posting fee and the contract that would be given to Darvish. The Red Sox set a record with a $51.1 million posting fee for exclusive negotiating rights with Daisuke Matsuzaka in November of 2006. He eventually signed a six-year, $52 million contract with the club. Darvish, 24, would attract plenty of interest in the event that he is posted, but some scouts doubt whether he will be a front line starter in the major leagues.
October 13, 201014 yr From an article I read one time on Darvish, he seems pretty intent on staying in Japan. He said something to the extent of going to America to play Major League Baseball is a sign of disrespect to your homeland.
October 13, 201014 yr The Diamondbacks making a bid on this guy? That's got disaster written all over it. How would spending a fortune on ONE player fix a cellar dweller team? That's not even mentioning how these guys always manage to have problems in transitioning from culture to culture.

What's really interesting with that is that he's of mixed race, and the Japanese are normally not accepting of those that aren't pure kin. Though of course, he's also famous, so they'd want to "claim" him. Much likes South Korea "claimed" Hines Ward's ethnicity after the whole super bowl thing.
October 13, 201014 yr Didn't the Diamondbacks just release players from somewhat big contracts so they could start a rebuilding mode? Haven't teams learned from the Dice-K situation?

Well I don't think the D-backs would have to do anything, if history repeats with them, they'll win the West in 2013. Seems they do good for 3 years winning the division then suck for 3 years [see 2001 [West] 2004 [111 losses] 2007 [West] 2010 [last place]]
October 17, 201014 yr i don't understand why Japanese Pitchers are so highly wanted in the MLB? For 50 + Million dollar these guys barely turn into back end of the rotation starters. The only exception in Japanese players are Hideo Nomo, Ichiro and maybe Dice K.
