June 18, 201113 yr Yeah, I agree with most of what was said in the article. Unfortunately, if we want to still be "contenders," we have to get a SP or two, preferably a veteran. Also, we would have to go on an unbelievable run, right now. I would have been a little more comfortable with this if it happened a month ago, rather than now. We're getting way too close to the trading deadline now. If we can't make something happen, let JJ take the rest of the year off. Then send Hanley to the minors to work on stuff and get his head right. He should have pulled out of his "slump" by now. This is a attitude, or work ethic issue. He needs to know that he is not too good to be sent down. Trade Buck, and probably Dobbs, and Infante. Then, as much as I don't want to, I would at least listen to offers on Gaby. Then every dime made BETTER be spent on FA this offseason.
June 18, 201113 yr Coming into the season not many unbiased people considered this to be very good team. I think the consensus was this was a low 80's win team but the best pitcher is injured and the best position player fell off a cliff. If you look at the more important players, about the same have over and under achieved. Buck - As expected Gaby - Over Infante - Under Hanley - Under - Fell off a cliff Dobbs - Over LoMo - Over Coghlan - Under Stanton - Over Boni - Over JJ - Injured Anibal - Over Ricky - As expected Volstad - Under Vazquez - Under Nunez - As Expected
June 18, 201113 yr Gaby, Stanton, and Lomo have not overachieved in my opinion. They look like they are as expected.

First, I don't think Stanton is overachieving. I think he's in the "about expected" category. Secondly, I think people might have had too high expectations for both Infante and [especially] Coghlan. They might be playing beneath their current abilities, but I'm not sure it's by that much. Infante is harder for me to pin down, because he hasn't always been an everyday player. He put up some good numbers last season (thanks in part to a slightly lucky BABIP), but has been terribly inconsistent throughout his career. I'd assume he's a >.600 OPS hitter, but I'm not sure by how much. I suppose my issue is that I'm not sure what people were expecting of him this season. Coghlan quite simply has not been hitting well outside of the second half of 2009. He had a .406 BABIP in the second half. I think his 2010 numbers are much closer to the hitter he really is right now, which is low .700s OPS. I don't think that people should be expecting much better from him. So in some respects, I think that the FO should have been more cautious with regard to Coghlan. It seems like they thought he was going to be more likely hitting like he was in 2009 than 2010.

He fizzled out at the end of the season. This is where I expect him to be. Same goes to Logan Morrison. Same goes to Anibal Sanchez. Ricky is definitely a curious case. He's up to the same bulls*** as last season, though. Unfortunately.

Also, the guys who have overachieved haven't done so spectacularly (aside from Anibal). The underachievers have taken it to the extreme. (starting with Hanley Ramirez, THE EXPECTED BEST PLAYER ON THE TEAM)
June 18, 201113 yr Author Also, I think you can make a case that the backend of our bullpen has underachieved. (unless if you think they're just not very good, which could indeed be the case)
June 18, 201113 yr I don't see why you think Morrison and Stanton have overachieved. Also, the guys who have overachieved haven't done so spectacularly (aside from Anibal). I can put Stanton in the "As Expected" bucket. I think Gaby has greatly outperformed his expectations. Last year his WAR was 0.5 in 151 games. This year it's 2.9 in 70 games. The guy is having a fantastic season.

Gaby has strong peripherals to go along with his results; he's become a better hitter. And a big reason why his WAR is better already is because he's become much better defensively, probably in large part to working with Perry Hill.
June 19, 201113 yr With the way the rotation is currently set up, I don't see how anyone can say this team is overloaded with talent, even if they do start hitting. They have arguably the weakest rotation in the division.

June 19, 201113 yr Did you even read what I wrote? The starting pitching is really bad right now. By the time JJ come back its not going to matter. The rotation is not deep or talented enough to handle these kind of losses.
