damn. i had a 3.1 GPA with a 1080 i think on my SAT's. i thought that was desent but some of you all are making me feel like an underachiever.

I got a 1010 on the SAT as an 8th grader. :lol I got 1050 in 7th grade

Thanks for the advice, alkazoid! haha, I wish my dad felt the same way that you do (eg-thinking that medicine is the best field).

 

I figure I'll probably end up in something not too surgical (eg-dermatology, etc.) or I'll be an OB/GYN (or maybe just a gyno....I'm not liking the whole "get called at 2 AM 5 times a week" thing). The malpractice insurance would be horrible for a GYN, but all the female gyns I know are always fully booked and making $130,000+. Women want female gynos, and it'd be a pretty easy ride for me. of course, the actual job itself isn't the grandest thing, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too bad.

 

but, with all this HMO and insurance crap, who knows what the situation is going to be when I get to college?

 

I think my dad is just wants what's "best" for me (he's a doctor), but all the other doctors I've talked to agree that medicine is a good choice. I figure, people are never going to stop getting sick and needing physicians, and the job is stable.

 

I love English and literature, but I know there's no way I can make a good career out of that and still feel stable with my job. Plus, I've always done pretty well in science, anyways.

believe me, my mom is a doctor too (an ob/gyn, in fact), and she was probably the biggest detractor i had when i picked medicine.

 

many old timers won't recommend the field because of how much less they make now with managed care than they did in the past. it really sucks to watch a whole digit disappear from your paycheck. but the truth is, most docs who have entered the field during the past 10 years don't really mind managed care as much.

 

in reality, i don't really think medicine is the best field, and it's certainly not ideal for the majority of people. i don't know you personally, but as long as you're not going into medicine for the money, i don't think it's necessary to question your own motives. if you like people, you like problem solving, and you like having to know a boatload of information, then you're probably on the right track.

 

derm is the most coveted specialty of them all... if you can get into that, your life is pretty much set. it doesn't really matter since you've still got like 332894 years before you have to decide anything, but derm is a good one. :thumbsup

 

as far as payouts are concerned... what your father and my mother experienced was an earth-shattering shift from having patients with small insurance co's to having patients in giant managed-care plans during the mid-to-early 90's. now that the market is basically owned by managed care companies, payouts have been about the same for quite awhile now and are expected to remain steady. the fact that malpractice is seen by all politicians as a "crisis" means that the situation won't get any worse.

 

in the end, you won't make nearly as much as your pops did, but if you're cool, more power to ya! think of it as a good way to weed out the people looking for t-money (e.g. pudge).

 

if you like english and literature, and you enjoy writing and arguing, you might like law... that's a good one.

Well, just to keep you guys updated like I said I would (I think this is turning into The Life: Applying for College). One of my closest of friends, who forces me to do stuff I have to do while I do the same to him, forced me to work on my college apps yesterday (I hadn't really been into it since before Thanksgiving). I wrapped up my UM application, though I haven't sent it in, because I want some people to look at my essay. I really like it, I got on one of those 10-20 min inspiration tracks I go on and wrote about Affirmative Action. I'll post if anyone wants to give me some opinions on it.

 

Another I have come to realize that is an important factor in when you apply: how many people apply to a certain school from your school. FIU has about 90% of a 112 (small for Belen, we usually average 130ish) strong Senior class. While this won't hurt me I don't believe because of my high standardized test scores and the fact that they won't stop bothering me, I do kind of feel bad for others in my class who actually have FIU as 1st or 2nd choice. When the kids with the highest GPAs (notice the lack of the words smart or intelligence) apply to the same school, this could be a problem. FIU notoriously takes on alot of Belen kids, so they're fine. But the same goes for UCF. Tons of people.

 

For me personally, all of 3 people are applying to American. That helps. And I'm not sure on UM, but alot of people that I think would have applied haven't. I'm going to check on that one.

on a serious note, i dont think a school matters much. its about what you do THERE. id be very happy going to USF and doing a great job there and multitasking.

 

extracurriculars are big too. imma bragg here for a while, HHS has by far the best gifted program in Dade(im in it :w00t ) we have sent over 25 kids in 3 years to ivy leagues, and every1 goes to a 4 year university at worst. weve even been front page of the herald.

thats a conservative list, based on my assumption of having a 900-1050 SAT. it could adjust depending if i score higher on my SAT

 

other possible schools include UCF,UM,FIU

im glad im thru with that crap. My brother is a junior in high school. He's lookin at Furman, Naval Academy, UNC, Vanderbilt, and Clemson honors.

applications sucked. Luckily, I applied at 1 school, and got in to where I wanted to go.

this is your last summer to have fun w/ your HS peeps before leaving for college. you can always take summer classes later on in college so your senior year is pimp.

Trust me TAKE those summer classes, My brother went to Auburn over Pitt just because at Pitt he would have to take summer classes, it proved to be a big mistake.

 

Summer classes can help get you adjusted before the big rush comes in for the fall.
