yea unlike the rest of you i admire Scott Boras and his work.

 

Yea i planed to apply there anyways also at FSU they have a good sports program, but UM has one of the best baseball programs is closer to home.

 

I never knew you started making contact in collage i thought that what matter was the education. Guess i was wrong. take it from me...

Just make sure you're very good friends with the guys in Sports Management at UM (I.E. me).

take it from me, UM is a VERY TINY school. i don't even know how they manage to fill all of their sports teams. i had tons of athletes living on my floor when i lived in the dorms there.

 

of course i'm biased since i'm a hurricane, but i can tell you for sure that the most important thing you need to do is make contacts in the biz--especially if you want to be an agent.

dude you should make friends with as many people as possible, whether their potential agents or not. you never know in the future, you dont want enemies

well i don't know enough about agenting to tell you that, but i hear drew rosenhaus' book has a lot of good info in it.

he had lots of luck he also went to two school with some good teams. He probably met the agent in duke since they have good basketball players and some entering the draft and looking for agents.

Although I'd rather go into Sports Management. wow it is a small world but it's pretty cool that we're both planning to go into the same field and everything. I didn't even know there was such thing as Sports Journalism, I just thought there was a general Journalism. I'm not too informed with college programs :confused

 

I definitely would like to go into that though.

The book of Drew Rosenhous is called "A shark never sleeps: wheeling and dealing with NFL's most ruthless agent"

after reading some reviews in seems hes full of himself and half the book is on how tough and crafty he thinks he is. Not what i thought it would be, but he does mention how he got to the top.

there is also the Leigh Steinberg book Winning With Integrity: Getting What You Want Without Selling Your Soul. Read a review and its says its a very good book breaks down the negotiating process.

what u mean by the drew rule?

the NFL instituted a set of rules that basically try to prevent agents from stealing the clients of other agents. they made it after drew basically ran amok stealing everybody's clients.

AJBurnett, Well i hate/Like Scott, I hate him because of what he is doing with Castillo and Pudge, but i also give that guy lots lots of props, It takes alot to be an agent like that... Almost owning all of baseball, i dunno how he can do it..4 words... HE IS THE MAN!!

Well, I am actually in this process as we speak so I guess I can be a semi-authority (or not) on it. Just the things I'm dealing with as I apply:

 

Being the most un-motivated person ever school wise, I don't have that magic 3.0 GPA everyone creams their pants to have. Then again, I didn't go to the easiest of High Schools plus I nailed a 1310 on the SAT (I'll crack 1400 this Saturday, I am not happy with that 1310) and a 29 on the ACT (I wanted over 30 but the money I'll spend on taking it again I could send somewhere else for an application). I've only taken one SAT II, U.S. History and got a 670 on that. I don't think that is that bad, considering the night before was Game 3 of the NLDS and I was at that game (then I went to go help administer a kickoff dance at my school). I have a bazillion extracurriculars including a couple big ones, but I'll elaborate on those only if asked further later.

 

I am hell bent on my major already, Political Science. I'm really skilled in all the areas necessary for law/politics/business, and I figure if anything I can own some stuff on the side no big deal. From undergrad school I'll be heading into Law School, and from there either to the Hill or to the Courts, whichever one pulls me tighter. I'd enjoy being well off because I don't want my kids to be limited like I am for college (I'll elaborate later) and I'd like my wife not to have to work if she doesn't want to. But other than that I would rather make a difference than be rich, so money is really not that big of a deal for me (in case you were wondering).

 

My dream school, is, has been, and always will be UM. I was bred on the Orange and Green, as both my parents went there for their college degress. They supposedly have a good law school, so if anything I can come back. But the problem is tuition. I just can't pay over 20 G's a year. That canceled out Boston College (a Jesuit university like my high school, which I wouldn't have minded going to at all because I will have a couple friends going to Boston), George Washington (which would have been great because it is in DC), and put American (my last resort DC univerisity) and Loyola of Chicago (Jesuit) on the extreme backburners because it will take some working on my part to pay it off. I can work my magic in building a system for working it (one of my specialties) but I will cross that bridge when I get to it.

 

I am still hell bent on going to UM, and I know I would get in easy. Problem still remains money. I cansomehow manage it maybe, but I don't know. It is going to take some Juanky magic and I've brought out Juanky magic so much one of these days I am wondering if it will ever run out. FIU and UCF I have applied to as well, being they are both state school and a big big chunk (if not all) is chewed off by Florida Prepaid. Miami Dade Honors College is my ultimate last resort.

 

Problem is, my dad, being the a**hole he is, is doing the opposite of other parents. Other parents in my school want their kids to apply to better universities. My friend Robby, who I could run mental circles around, was told by his parents that he should apply to Georgetown. My dad? Only wants me applying to FIU. He doesn't even want me applying to UCF because he thinks that it won't all be covered.

 

So basically, even though 6 universities will be getting my applications, only 3 can be seriously considered. UM, because I would love to go there. FIU, because yeah, plus I know alot of people that will be there. And UCF, because I have friends going there and the sooner I get out of my house (rather, away from my dad) the better. American and Loyola, even if they accept me, would have to be turned down for monitary reasons.

 

Welcome to my college hell. Hopefully I can do something to make things work in the end, because I have learned that in life 9 out of 10 times if you want something to happen you need the will of God and the help of others besides your actual effort in the thing. Being that most of the time the former 2 aren't on my side doesn't help, but maybe there is a little bit of Juanky magic left in my bag.

I fully acknowledge that UF is a good school. And that FSU is a school. But I refuse to apply to either, plus I hate Tally the city and Gainesville is bleh. And #4 is pushing it, since it was more like 54 (UM wasn't too far behind, it was 63 I believe. All this c/o US News).

juanky, thanks for sharing your personal situation. i was very much like you when i was in HS: i was unmotivated, my grades were bleh, and my test scores + extracurrics were really the only things i was banking on.

 

considering that i'm a UM student, i'd love to sell you on UM, but to tell you the truth, if money is a problem, UM probably isn't worth it. i don't know your parents' financial situation so i don't know what they have to say about UM.

 

if you can get into one of the DC schools, i think you have every right to take out loans and tough it out. in my opinion, the city i would've most wanted to go to school at was DC... it should be the experience of a lifetime. if you're going to spend 20k a year, you're better off doing it at a DC school than at UM.

 

the good thing about UM is that they LOVE to give out academic scholarships. i know that they are flexible with their cutoffs for getting each scholarship because they gave me a scholarship i didn't even qualify for (3/4). they don't tell you this, but they give out academic scholarships like willy nilly, so it may not cost you 20K to go there after all.

 

i'm curious why you haven't applied to UF or FSU. they're extremely affordable, let you escape the parents, and are better than UCF. if i'm not mistaken, FSU is very good for political science. (it's also in tallahassee!)

 

obviously my opinion doesn't matter much, but if i were in your situation, i'd jump at the opportunity to learn political science in a city like DC. hell, i'd jump at the opportunity to learn anything there. i think you should pick between UF (if money is a big problem) and any of the DC schools you mentioned (+ georgetown wouldn't hurt!).

 

i don't know what you've heard, but miami is actually not the greatest for pre-law students.

oh, and please don't refuse to apply to UF just because of sports rivalries. considering what you're going into and considering finances, i'd guess that UF or FSU, actually, would be the best schools for you in the state.

 

this is your career we're talking about. you can still go to FSU/UF and root for the canes (i've actually met a couple closet gators fans at UM).

I was referring to UM's law school, not pre-law.

 

Anyways, yeah the main reason I wasn't applying to UF or FSU before was because they are the worst of the worst. But that isn't so much the reason anymore. One of my cousin's friends (c/o 2002) goes to UF and is a huge UM fan. But frankly, I'd get a better education at FIU than FSU. And UF, besides starting to become really really selective, just isn't right for me. I went there and I just didn't feel it. Not the same feeling I got interning at UM every day and not even the same feeling when I took a couple of poitical workshops at FIU.

 

But yeah, if I get accepted to DC Ill try and pull some magic out of the bag. I absolutely despise the cold and only three people from my school are even applying there (including myself, and that is really two more than I expected). But I have a bunch of friends in other schools in their Junior year right now, I could always drag them along one year behind . Besides, I really know I'm going to make new friends anyways. I'm just worried about that one first week that is gonna be killer.

 

I'm gonna be applying to American (when I finish the application online, and it's free! Woohoo!) for summer. That should help a little bit. And if I get accepted to both UM and American and UM gives me some sort of scholarship like you say they might, then maybe American will follow suit.

 

I'll keep you guys posted on what happens.
