I'm currently a freshman at Gettysburg College, so I had to go through all of this last year (applications and such). I only ended up applying to four schools; University of Connecticut, Fairfield University, Gettysburg College, and the College of William and Mary.

 

I am a history/political science major, and I must say, they are two fun majors (if you enjoy them, of course).

 

For Juanky, don't worry about picking a school where you already know people. I did not know anyone before I came here to Gettysburg. Part of the fun of that first week of college is meeting new people and making new friends.

 

And Juanky, if you have any questions about the poli. sci. major (or any questions for that matter), ask away. I remember all too well how stressful all of that college stuff was.

I know I want to go pre-med, but I don't know what school yet. Duke would be really exciting to go to. It'd be a reach for me, but I think I could get in if I keep up my grades. My GPA is a 3.7 right now, (but hopefully I'll pull it up), and I think my extracurriculars are OK (cross country, band, track). Duke is pretty expensive, though. I'm only a soph., so we'll see how my family's financial situation is then. Rice has a good program (automatic acceptance into Baylor Med.), but it's a little too close to home for me. My brother goes to Univ. Texas at Austin and loves it there. Those are my top 3 right now.

 

To those of you who are still fresh./sophs: you've gotta keep up your grades. Banking on test scores is not going to work. A college is going to see that you're smart, but you're not motivated if your GPA doesn't match your amazing test scores.

In my case, I got a scholarship to UM based more on my test scores than on my GPA. Like some of you, I wasn't terribly motivated in high school & had like a 3.2 GPA. I would definately say concentrate more on the GPA, but sometimes it can work either way.

i said 4 in j-schools, 48 in all schools.

 

i have a 3.7(?) i believe, around there,195 community service hours and counting, i crreated my own community service club that works with mentally challenged people, so thatll rise. im the s[ports editor, most likely editor in chief to be. im the fhsaa SID rep of my school, bunch of high school stats crap,quill and scroll, and state qualifyer in debate(juanky, i dunno if you debate, but belen has a great team, and us,hialeah, are usually in cahoots with them)

 

this saturdays my first SAT, i plan to take it 2 more times minimum, my projected range SHOULD be 1000-1150, but i wouldnt be surprised to reach 12+ or as low as 970-ish.

im applying to FAU,IU,USF, for the sake of acceptance and backup. but really my dream, my love, my goal, my life is UF.thats my 1st choice

secondly, my 1st bakup is santa fe honors college in g-ville with a full scholarship plus florida merit, so ill get 175% then transfer to UF for little or no money.

 

BTW, juanky, youd walk into UF with that score.

I know Belen has a kickass debate team. I would be on that debate team, except push come to shove and I valued other activities over it. Plus, I am not exactly best friends with the moderator.

 

I could walk into UF all I want, I still DO NOT want to go there.

 

BTW, College essays are so easy it is awesome. Two hundred fifty words on different topics is a cake walk. I wish we could get in based on essays. I'm gonna work on UCF's essays tonight because that is what I have time for outside of other work, then do UM and American tomorrow. Loyola's application is started but will have to wait since it isn't even that high on my Top List anyways (5 out of 5).

i really dont know how I got into Furman...well, I guess it was because I did early decision, and got a 1300 on the SAT. My weighted gpa was only a 3.3.

i'll second that. the biggest fun you'll ever have in college will be with people whom you didn't know from HS.

 

it is my experience that the majority of people who come to college already having a couple of friends actually end up having the least fun socially. they stick in their groups and aren't really forced to make friends like everyone else. having a friend from HS is kinda like an unwanted security blanket that really holds you down.

 

something you should keep in mind is that it doesn't really matter where a lawyer/politician/judge does his undergrad... people only look at the final stamp--where you get your JD.

 

if you're going to break the bank only once, you're much better off breaking it for law school. so in that sense, you're much better off getting your BA from FIU and saving your money to go to American Law (provided you get in, of course). going to columbia for undergrad and having to settle for UF law for your JD due to financial reasons is a bummer (i personally know someone who this happened to).

Yea i planed to apply there anyways also at FSU they have a good sports program, but UM has one of the best baseball programs is closer to home.

that's awesome! in my (biased) opinion, you're going into the best field of them all.

duke is a stellar first choice for pre-med, but if finances might be a problem, you're probably better off saving your money for the bigger show (med school). to tell you the truth, where you do your undergrad doesn't matter much at all. where you go to med school doesn't matter a whole lot, either. it's where you do your residency training training that counts.... so in the end, going to a non-prestigious school for undergrad (i.e. not duke) won't make a difference anywhere but in your wallet.

 

the rice/baylor program you mentioned is outstanding, and i remember lamenting over the fact that i missed their early deadline when i was in HS. combined med programs have their pros and cons, but that particular program is GREAT if you aren't looking to accelerate your bachelors. here's a list of other combined med programs if you're interested:

anyways, i realize you didn't ask for any advice, but seeing that you're still a sophomore, i'll give you some anyway. if you're looking to get into something medically oriented: get patient contact now! volunteer in a setting where you can work with patients (e.g. a nursing home, a clinic, or a pediatrics ward in a hospital). that'll EASILY trump any other extracurric you have going for you (although sports & music also help). run-of-the-mill volunteer work doesn't help much these days, so make sure what you do is patient-oriented.

 

right now i'm in my second year of medical school and i got in through a combined/guaranteed admission program (like rice/baylor), so if you do have any questions, feel free to PM me... i actually know what i'm talking about for once. good luck!

I got a 1010 on the SAT as an 8th grader. :lol dang, WC, you need to get your a** in gear. Seriously, I slacked off my first year and a half in high school. I had a 2.9. My parents got onto my hardcore, I was scared that I wasnt gonna be able to get into the college I wanted to go to (at that point, I had no idea where I wanted to go). I got my a** in gear and had about a 3.7 gpa after that...but my weighted was still only a 3.3 when I graduated. You're a freshman, so you should start bustin your butt. And don't give the whole extracurriculars deal. I was on the football team (which you and I both know are yearround sports b/c of the offseason) and weightlifting team, along with various clubs. I was lucky I got into the school I wanted to, but I really don't know how I got in.
