March 16, 201313 yr Jeez Jones, what were you swinging at there? Ball 4. Jones looked like shit the entire series.
March 16, 201313 yr As bad as the Americans hit, Joe Torre lost the game. Just like he would've lost it in the 1st round, but Cishek bailed him out against Canada. Edwin Rodriguez managed to win because PR has no big league pitchers so who gives a fuck. Torre managed to...keep pitchers healthy and big league teams happy.
March 16, 201313 yr I don't know if I'm more pissed at Hosmer for being on the roster when he sucks or at Torre for letting him hit there. tbh, there wasnt really anything on the bench but willie bloomquist and 2 catchers.

Then have pitchers that arent big leaguers pitch in this for the USA. The ones that are there by and large dont give a damn anyway.

Have big league pitchers and have them pitch the way big league pitchers do. Tony Pena has had no problems using the DR bullpen the way it should be used. The U.S. put a bullpen together that was great to mix-and-match with, yet Torre managed as if the games were Spring Training games. The Pestano inning might've not gotten out of hand had he used Affeldt earlier when the lefty was up with the bases loaded. Why did he take out Vogelsong anyway? He was pitching well and could've easily finished the 6th (wasn't really all that close to 80 pitches yet...).

PR won because the line-up made Nelson Figuerora look like Cy Young. The bats have been pretty quiet the whole tournament outside of Wright. In my mind the outcome of the game didn't come down to managerial micromanagement. The line-up left much to be desired, especially the 7-9 hitters who were absolutely worthless.

The managerial decisions were still awful though. Throughout the whole tournament, even games they won.
March 16, 201313 yr Its largely because Joe Torre works for MLB. MLB didnt want to face the wrath of any MLB team bitching about so and so getting a niggle or a bruise becuase of overwork. You know like Wright, who would face the same type of injury in ST. They should have brought in someone not affiliated with MLB to manage the squad, first and foremost.
March 16, 201313 yr Yeah, I mean, Torre kind of sucked, I agree. But I think the game was lost as soon as the US took it up the ass by 38 year old Nelson Figueroa. I really don't understand why the US couldn't do better than Hosmer at first base. They really needed another big bat on paper.

They couldnt bother any other 1b and make him get on a god awful plane to fly in. Or even drive in from a different place in Arizona.
March 16, 201313 yr There were plenty to choose from, too. Fielder, Konerko, Freeman, Ike Davis, LaRoche...
March 16, 201313 yr I'd prefer Hosmer over Ike Davis, tbh. I wouldn't. Hosmer was probably the worst first baseman in MLB last season statistically.
March 16, 201313 yr Davis went like 0-150 at one point or at least it seemed like it. Tough days for my Metsies.
March 16, 201313 yr As bad as Davis was last year, I never figured he actually hit 32 homers. He woulda been a better pick that Hosmer. Damn.
March 16, 201313 yr Davis went like 0-150 at one point or at least it seemed like it. Tough days for my Metsies. Davis isn't an all-star, but have you looked at Hosmer's 2012 line and factored in the defensive difference? Gaby Sanchez might have been more valuable than Hosmer in 2012.
March 16, 201313 yr Davis had an .888 .OPS with 20 HR's in the 2nd half last year. He struggled the first two months, but then hit 27 HR's after June 1st. He's definitely a better player than Hosmer at this point.
March 16, 201313 yr Looks like I was a Mets' bandwagoner and quit paying attention after the first half.
