Despite the facts that Goldschmidt was the best bat in the NL and plays gold glove defense at his position. Kind of a shame, he really deserves it.

November 6, 201312 yr If your team finishes .500, you can't be that valuable. Just the way it is. It's not the best hitter award, that's the Hank Aaron one and Goldschmidt did rightfully win that. I know A-Rod and Dawson won MVP on last place teams but it's rare.

I know A-Rod and Dawson won MVP on last place teams but it's rare. Goldschmidt is a Gold Glove caliber first baseman. He also stole 15 bases. He is basically a 5-tool First Baseman, which is just about impossible to find. The last great 5-tool 1B I can think of is the great Derrek Lee off the top of my head...

November 6, 201312 yr Author Read the whole thing. He may have been the best overall player in the NL, but not the most valuable, specifically because his team did not make the playoffs. I agree it's a crock, but that's how they see it. As Admin said, he got the Hank Aaron award as he rightly deserved, he's got the gold glove he deserved, and he's also going to win the Silver Slugger award tonight [most likely], so he's basically getting everything BUT the MVP, because his team ended up at .500 and missed the postseason. I don't agree with that, because I feel MVP should be for "best player," as you do, but, this is how they do it. In a way, it does make sense. Going with Admin's side, "his team was .500," Goldschmidt DOES have the best stats for the MVP candidates, by a good margin. However, what did those stats do for his team? Got them to .500. That's it. What do they do without him? Pretty much the same thing, they sit out in October. McCutchen and Molina, however, were instrumental on both sides of the ball (and Molina even more so, which may actually give him the MVP) on two of the best teams in the league that both made the playoffs. That does make them more valuable as a player, since their contributions came in higher pressure games, and led their teams to the playoffs. Yadi also has the added bonus of being a catcher and handling a pretty young pitching staff. We'll see what happens. If this award became the "BPA" (Best Player Award), Goldschmidt wins it this year, in my opinion. But, he was not the most valuable, because of the reasons stated above. Moose.
November 6, 201312 yr Fair enough. I mean, if I'm a member of the BBWAA I vote for Goldschmidt as I believe you can interpret the meaning of MVP either way that you described. And I'm pretty sure there's probably some writers divided on that as well. I can't disagree either way, those are two valid ways of viewing the award, but I feel it goes to the best player in each respective league as you do.
