April 22, 201511 yr If Yelich goes on the DL, the Marlins seem primed to call up Jordany Valdespin. Here are the slash lines for the four outfielders currently on the AAA New Orleans roster: A. .283/.340/.348 B. .355/.429/.452 C. .293/.340/.415 D. .217/.321/.304 None of them are on the 40-man roster, so convenience is really not an issue. Option C is Jordany Valdespin, the likely call up. That's the second best choice. Option B is Brady Shoemaker, clearly the best choice if looking solely at statistics. Shoemaker is a 27 year old who has played 546 games in the minor leagues and OPS'd .867 in his career. The Marlins love familiar faces (Kevin Gregg, Brad Penny), but seem to have an issue with giving new guys a chance. Free Shoemaker! We don't know what he'll do against Major League pitching (probably not much), but we already know what Valdespin will do: (certainly) not much.
April 22, 201511 yr It won't really matter who they bring up as I would imagine Ichiro gets that playing time

April 22, 201511 yr Yeah...A situation like this is exactly why we signed Ichiro. It sucks to be without Yelich, but now Ichiro can get some legit playing time for now.
April 23, 201511 yr Actually, Valdespin is likely the better statistical option. Shoemaker's numbers are all BABIP fueled throughout his career and that traditionally doesn't translate well to the majors. His ZIPS is just a .650 ops where as Valdespin is in the low 700s. Also, we need a lefty on the bench and Shoemaker is rh. Shoemaker would be a pretty bad call up, nothing wrong with Valdespin. I think you're looking at it with back up quaterback syndrome
