Blue Jays signed RHP Kerry Ligtenberg, who had been with the Baltimore Orioles, to a two-year, $4.5 million contract. The Orioles didn't think Ligtenberg was worth $1.2 million for 2004. That was probably a mistake on their part, but the Blue Jays are overpaying here. Maybe Ligtenberg will pitch well enough to be worth $2.25 million per season, but no one else was going to pay him this kind of money. If the Blue Jays like him this much, perhaps they'll use him over Aquilino Lopez in the closer's role.

He has a career 3.09 era. I'd take him.

Oh well, I'd still rather have had a person who has closed before instead of experimenting with a set-up man turned into a closer, I mean if we're going to do that, give it to Chad Fox. Also, don't rule out the possibility of Looper returning although that's not exactly the most confidence inspiring move.

what about our farm for pitchers?

Our best ones are at the lower levels. Allison in '05. I seriously doubt he will be up that quick.

It would be kinda nice if they turned Allison into a closer. Sounds like he has the ideal closer stuff. I mean our pitching staff is young and one of the best in the majors, it'd be nice if we could keep our staff as is and put him in the bullpen and shut guys down.

Technically, Ligtenberg is a closer turned into a set-up man.

He was the Braves closer until he got hurt and Rocker took over. He had 30 saves in '98.
