December 10, 200322 yr Yankees rotation? What rotation? Petite - Gone Clemens - Gone Wells - FA, likely not coming back and on the decline of his career So Mussina, Vazquez, Weaver, Contreras, and a PTBNL (not the best IMO) or are you counting on the Boss money to buy the best again? Not true. Mussina- no one doubts this guy and he's better against lefties than righties Vazquez- 2.85 era on grass Contreras- low 2 era as a starter Wells- 4.14 era, over 200 innings, good postseason until game 5, should be fine after surgery- oh yeah, best K/BB in the last 80 years. Lieber- 20 game winner Lieber, should be an okay 5 starter. He's was throwing 92 mph after inital recovery Weaver- throws 96, has good stuff, will his head be on straight? Is it any possible for him to pitch worse? The Yanks have more guys with less than 3.5 eras than the marlins. Furthermore, Pavano and Penny have worse eras than david wells. p.s. clemens is overrated Question marks. Vazquez is switching league, although I think he'll be fine. He's the best pitcher on that staff, in my opinion. Mussina will be Mussina. Then, you've got tons of 'em. Can Wells hold up? He's still old and out of shape, even if he did have surgery. Weaver should just add a ? to the end of his name, he's become the eternal one. Leiber hasn't pitched in a long time, you never know how they're going to respond. Contreras certainly put up great numbers as a starter. His 9 starts were against the Tigers, Reds, Orioles, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Tigers, Devil Rays, Devil Rays, White Sox. He went 6-1 against that bunch, got SHELLED by Boston. The only truly good offense he beat was Toronto. He's still a question mark, although I think he'll be solid.
December 10, 200322 yr I think he forgets that most of the eras were horrible until Toroborg was fired if you take a look, most of our losses before then were horrible like 6-7 run losses which screws up era and then look at the second half... Pavz, Penny, Beckett all pitched their best pitching of the season, and Redman was just as consistent as ever.
December 10, 200322 yr Additionally, Vladdy always puts up great numbers at PPS, can anyone get the stats on that.
December 10, 200322 yr Author well, if our era is so bad, how did we win the world series? The Yanks had no hitting with RISP, and your pitchers were good this postseason. The marlins overall had a better team at that point, the yanks were injured, tired, and swinging at anything within 5 feet of the strike zone. But your argument does not counter what I said. The totality of the marlins rotation is not extremely good, it is a lot of question marks regarding injuires and high hopes as well.
December 10, 200322 yr Author from 2001-2003 326/379/533/912 92ab good, but not "Vladtastic" numbers, which includes over a .400 obp, and about a .600 slug. Again, let me stress that .912 is a good ops, but you aren't getting what you're paying for, and the marlins have to be as efficient as possible.
December 10, 200322 yr Author Vazquez is switching league, although I think he'll be fine. He's the best pitcher on that staff, in my opinion. Mussina will be Mussina. Then, you've got tons of 'em. Can Wells hold up? He's still old and out of shape, even if he did have surgery. Weaver should just add a ? to the end of his name, he's become the eternal one. The only truly good offense he beat was Toronto. He's still a question mark, although I think he'll be solid. My response: -Contreras does stink against Boston, he's been good against everyone else. He out pitched the Reds hitters when they had good offense mid season (they were respectable at that point, and Contreras was pitching hurt at GAB), a good offensive white sox team, and he beat Toronto as well. He also pitched well against the Orioles, who didn't have a despicable offense, though not great either. Overall, Contreras is a good pitcher who loses some control with runners on base, but still throws mid to high 90s with the nastiest splitter in the game. The question isn't his ability to pitch (his era was less than pettitte's anyway), but if he can pitch all season. Probably, but you never know. -Weaver is a 6 starter/mop up/long man, so he's really not that big of a deal, but he could come back, he certainly has the ability -Lieber was throwing 92 mph off surgery and made a fantastic quick recovery much like Claussen. There should be no reason for Lieber not to be like Lieber of old. -Wells back surgery fixed him up for 2002 where he won 19 games, and coming off the biggest Jamesian pitching statistic, K/BB, with Wells fantastic number, he should be fine after surgery. Furthermore, he has a conditioning clause in his contract, so he will be in shape until about april 15th, but that's a start! -Vazquez will be hurt the league change as much as schilling, and he pitches better on grass than on turf, and hey, Yankee Stadium has grass! So the guys I'm not too worried about (not too sound to confident) are: Mussina Vazquez Contreras I have as much faith in Lieber and Wells as someone like Pavano or Penny, if not more so, because they have been better pitchers. Weaver has good stuff, and he might come around...hopefully. And dePaula has pitched well in the majors as well, our 7 man. The Yankees are pretty set.
December 10, 200322 yr Well, Choi is lefty.? And we DID win the World Series last year with a heavy righty lineup, and it sure didn't hurt us then. Its obviously not a situation that is desirable (all righty lineup...) Again, my argument is not if Vlad is good or not, it is that there are more efficient ways to spend money. This coming from a Yankee fan. Classic Vazquez will be hurt the league change as much as schilling, and he pitches better on grass than on turf, and hey, Yankee Stadium has grass! and the point is.............. The last time I checked, pitchers still threw off a big mound of D I R T.
December 11, 200322 yr We dont need any more pitching. Adding a One Reliever or Two is what we need but thats it. We need to replace Pudge's bat. Without that i dont think we can get Very far like last season. Pudge and Lowell were the leaders in RBI's.

December 11, 200322 yr I would be very satisfied going into 2004 with any combination of the current starting rotation we have. The bullpen, on the other hand- Chad Fox is the only pitcher down there I have confidence in. Looper too, when he's on. We need some cheap Mike Remlinger-type guys. Not sure what that means exactly, but I think you guys know what I mean :thumbup

December 11, 200322 yr If fans of other clubs are going to be shifting topics in this forum into one's about theirs, then yeah something should be done.

December 11, 200322 yr I don't really want Javy. Castro's time to put up or shut-up. Amen brother. Pass on Lopez who has had his worst offensive season in '02 to his best in '03. Dont trust it man. ANd certainly not at $8M per. Castro will hold down the fort. Find some other place to improve - Vlad replaces not only Fudges bat, but Lee's as well. And he will have a big impact with the Latin ballplayers and be a good mentor for Cabs. Oh, and you bat Vlad 3 in front of Lowell. Thoughts?

December 11, 200322 yr Author This coming from a Yankee fan. Classic Last time I checked, people shouldn't make distinctions between other people, that's called "prejudice." I know what inefficiency is, I go to Mets games. Nevertheless, the Yanks brass are idiots, but they have the money to get away with it. you don't. Capisce? im not giving him a hard time ive been given a harder time for less its just he has the yankee mentality and everything he states has to do with his yanks...he doesnt know we are on a budget and he wants us to keep uggy and pudge and why we traded lee and all this crap... Yankee mentality? Am I born stupid because my dad is from the Bronx? Am I of some inferior race? I'm strictly talking about baseball payroll efficiency (the point of this topic.) Other people bring up the yankees because I'm the resident Yankee fan. I advocate payroll efficiency, and not wasting it on the Lopez's and Guerreros of the world. And I don't care about my post count, it could be zero for all I care. I post when I eat, or when I'm at work. I have finals coming up today, tommorrow, and then tuesday. I've been on so much because I have been doing work and I'm in front of a computer. When I'm not in my room so much, you won't see me here as much.
