New Bullpen

Featured Replies

I'm sure Urena has a strong chance of making the team and will be given every opportunity to do so... but I don't think he's guaranteed a spot and if he needs to be cut they will do so.

The Marlins should and probably are moving on from the bullpen. I know the Marlins are going for that amazing super-pen to make up for one of the worst mlb rotations but we really need to move on. The rotation today is Volquez, Chen, Conley, Koehler and Locke with Urena and Phelps as options. Looks deep enough on paper but we know a couple of injuries always cripples this team. And what about our bad offence ? The Marlins finished 27th in run scored last season. And now we cant count on Jose shutting teams down now and then.

They're going to let go of Urena like they let go of Hand, and it's going to be a mistake. Urena would probably do well out of the bullpen.

I'm curious where they go next. I'm pretty sure the right handed bench bat is at the top of their list but I hope they haven't completely shut down the possibility of adding to the pen or the rotation. They've addressed both areas but it feels like both could still be improved without much effort.

I truly think that they plan on adding another righty bat and that's it.

Like it or not, it seems like the roster is set.

I don't hate it but Fister > Locke and Feliz > Wittgren/Ellington/Urena. Just two examples that I'd hope they consider. It's probably wishful thinking on the pen but I gotta believe if they could upgrade Locke (and still keep him) they would.

To be honest, Fister has been pretty shitty the past two years. You could make a case that Locke has more upside especially if he starts using his curveball again.

And while I think Feliz is better than those guys, it seems unnecessary. Feliz would be, what? Our 5th or 6th best reliever? I don't think our season is going down the drain because of the 6th reliever in the pen. Not to mention that Wittgren/Ellington/Urena can probably get the job done as it is.

I would actually like a lefty reliever, but the front office seems to feel like it's not necessary and they could be right about that.

Frisaro describes our bullpen as being a bunch of back end guys so that you have the ability to have a strong pen virtually every game. The pen could be Tazawa, Barraclough, Ramos one night and then Wittgren, Phelps, Ziegler the next night. When you need to give your best guys the night off, the quality of the pen doesn't drop off. That does sound sexy. This could be fun.

They still have some unsettled business to tend to, like finding a right-handed bat off the bench. More pitching depth also is a possibility.

This is Frisaro's article today and he lists Nova, Feldman, Cahill, Wood, Blevins, and Blanton as names the team could still be monitoring even though the pen is pretty much set. This is all I want, keep their options open and add on if they can and if it makes sense.

Of those guys, Travis Wood seems like the best fit imo. Joe Blanton would be my second choice. Not really interested in the others.

If we get Wood they better work on the pace of play initiatives because after four hours we would need to seek medical attention.
