December 17, 200322 yr neu is not going to be the 5th starter he'll be in the pen. He won't even last 2 years in Florida
December 17, 200322 yr yea of course, being a um grad, and being in a nice pitchers park will just do him horrible... hes not gonna last in florida
December 17, 200322 yr I sorry to see Redman go! He seemed to pitch well for the Marlins. Worst he went to AL West A's. Boo! :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown :hat
December 17, 200322 yr WTF :o . If Vlad is not signed.......dumb deal :banghead What is Beinfest Smoking? A lefty 14 game winner for a scrub and cash? Sounds great :banghead Of course Vlad is not signed, this deal could not have been after Vlad was signed. Beane would have smelled blood in the water and would have given us Neu but not much cash. This way we can get more money out of it. Neu is NOT a scrub. Not only will he be here more than 2 years, he WILL assume the closer's role one day down the line. You can hold me to that if you see fit, I have seen him for a few years now and have extreme confidence in him. You'll be surprised
December 17, 200322 yr What happened to Williamson for Redman? Man oh man, Beinfest, I hope this is a "domino" move, where it frees up money for some other stuff; taken on it's own, we got bent over on this trade... :banghead Agreed. I think Neu is a very nice addition, but wont replace Redman. Redman was a highly marketable trade commodity. If we had to offer arbitration to keep him, his value still would have been significant because we could have dealt him when Burnett was ready to come back. Instead, we severely undercut his worth by dealing him for just Neu. We have to wait to see what the rest of this deal entails, and if even there is a component to this that uses the freed up money elsewhere. I dont think this has to do with Vlad - but perhaps with an arm for the bullpen.

Neu might not be a closer, in fact, I would think he is not likely at all to be a closer. Spoon will get that job or even Blaine Neal. This deal is, I hope, not complete yet. If it was, we got ripped off by Beane - and that guy is way, WAY overrated as a GM by the way.
December 17, 200322 yr I don't think Neu is a potential closer, but he is a good arm in the pen. Besides lacking a closer at the moment, the bullpen doesn't have much depth right now, and this trade helped to address that. While Neu's numbers last season were decent but not great, he K/IP ratio in the minors was always very good. He should be able to cover the 6th or 7th inning next year. I like Red, but he was the odd man out. Although this was mostly about lowering payroll, the return wasn't bad considering Red was arbitration eligible.
December 17, 200322 yr Dont be an apologist. I'm doing no such thing. I am drawing an opinion on what I have seen the kid do while at college and in the games I go to see him play when he was with Oakland. This not based on anything any scout has said, or anything the FO has said. I think the kid can close, is that illegal now?
December 17, 200322 yr Please, Juuanky, dont go dramatic with me. I am stating my opinion vs. yours. No more. I think the problem here in evaluating this deal is the expectation of Redman. Was he really the odd man out? I thought we would have to get rid of him to keep this team together, but when Fudge didnt re-sign, I thought we could keep him. I am sorry, but you arent going to find a lefty starter with 3+ ERA for roughly $3M. Then, to trade him for a middle reliever/set up is questionable - ONLY if Redman WASNT the 'odd man out'. I know that the deal is not complete yet, and the repercussions are certainly a long way from being understood. And for that reason, I reserve TOTAL judgement. I am confused though, and I dont think this was done for Vlad at all - the money we saved is really insignificant - but then again, since when is almost $2M insignificant?
December 17, 200322 yr some of you guys are crying over Mark Redman, MARK REDMAN! the guy has a career 4.27 and has still yet have a a full season in which he doesnt tire out at some point he was helped out majorly by our ballpark and defense great guy and certainly was a big piece of our championship run but he can be replaced.

December 17, 200322 yr Redman was too much money. He doesnt fit into our rotation. He did well at the beggining but after struggled very mightly. Neu isnt an impovement in the Pen. He had more walks than strikeouts, and more hits than innings pitched.
December 17, 200322 yr I will be ticked off if The A's turn around and trade Redman and get more for him which i think they will
December 17, 200322 yr After all the deals, our current payroll is at $45,888,298.00 That means we've got $14.1 million to spend ($60 million limit). After rechecking the salary figures... I found out that we don't have $14.1 million to spend. We have close to $9 million. Enough to build a solid bullpen.
December 17, 200322 yr guys, this was a buy low, sell high move by Beinfest. Redman was a little past his high, he struggles during the second half and we probably saw the best he will ever play. him being arbitration eligible killed his trading value, but at least we got a bullpen pitcher for 2004, not 2006.

December 17, 200322 yr him being arbitration eligible killed his trading value Thank you! I've saying that for thousands of times to these users who think Redman was worth as much as Bonds... :banghead
