Yes, jokes aside he was contemplating retirement because he wasn't moving up in the system and the Marlins thought to offer him this position because, despite never making it anywhere, a lot of guys liked pitching to him. He was Jose Fernandez's personal catcher when Jose was rehabbing from TJ. Hoo obviously took the job and got himself to the majors in a much different way than expected but good for him. Nice story.

September 29, 20187 yr Probably I think it varies, but I've always been under the impression that they get paid like a lower level coach - like 50k - 100k, depending on the organization. They also receive a ton of incentives - bonuses, travel pay, and any other club incentives. I knew a "ball boy", that would sit down the outfield line and warm up the outfielder between innings. It was a minimum wage job, but he used to get tipped anywhere from a couple hundred, to even a thousand dollars + for a three game series. It would all depend on who the visiting team's outfielder was. Most of the ballplayers are pretty generous - if you help them, or contribute to their performance, they're going to reward you pretty well.
September 29, 20187 yr Author Yea but a team bullpen catcher is way more than the level of a ballboy. A ball boy is basically an assistant, almost like a volunteer, but they're not part of the team. A team specific bullpen catcher is part of the on field staff, basically a coach, like you said.

They do better than your average American - as far as income goes, and they get a share of bonuses, incentives, and if they're lucky even a ring.
