Marine Aquarium?

Anyone here happen to have a saltwater aquarium?  We're looking around at some tanks and thinking about pulling the trigger about getting one.  Seen some folks say they're incredibly challenging to keep well maintained and other people say it's honestly not that bad.  Was hoping for some first hand experience though from the most trusted source in the world - message boards.

I don't, but my dad and brother used to do it, and I recall it being quite a process especially when you'd have to change the water completely.

They quit after some sort of anemone they got died and wound up poisoning the whole tank/killing everything else off.

that was one thing i noticed while looking at stuff you could use to stock it.  there are some things that if they die or get stressed they basically dump all this poison into the water and kill everything off - large tanks can sometimes handle it but small tanks get wiped.  trade off is that if your large tank dies off you literally lose at least 5k worth of stock in them.

I didn't see any articles about having to change the water completely - i saw that you should change about 25% of the water every other week or so.  Maybe the filtration and pumps have improved so you don't have to change the whole tank?

How many gallons was their tank?  We were looking at a 200gal one.

I don't recall, though I don't think it was that big - and you're probably right, they didn't change the whole tank, but I think they did more than 25%.  It was probably 7+ years ago at this point, though.

Now I want a big fish tank, damnit

I did learn that if you're going the marine route instead of freshwater you typically want at LEAST a 60gal tank -especially if it's your first time starting up and handling a marine aquarium.  Gist it, there are so many variables to keep track of and it's so easy to kill the tank off that you want the extra gallons to give some leeway in case something pops up or infects the tank since the smaller the tank - the faster it will spread.  You basically mitigate your risk a bit with the bigger tank.  That's been one of the few universally stated things I've run across on every saltwater tank channel, board, etc.

You want to see some sexy looking tanks go check out the tanks on Waterbox or on Red Sea (i prefer Waterbox overall).  Them things are gorgeous!
