I don't think it's a big deal if we don't get Kendall. He's a luxury, and like I've been saying, we have bigger needs elsewhere....unless management doesn't feel confident about the Castro trial.

January 12, 200422 yr I want Kendall to come to the Marlins so bad. He is a great hitter and catcher. He does his job, and gets on base alot. Plus we need a hitter to replace pudge or hit in the 3rd spot in the order. Come on Beinfest get to work on kendall and saurbeck!

Puskar/AP) PITTSBURGH -- According several published reports, the Pittsburgh Pirates are close to completing a trade that would send catcher Jason Kendall to the San Diego Padres for catcher Ramon Hernandez and third baseman Jeff Cirillo. An official announcement of the deal could come as early as Tuesday. The two teams have discussed potential trades involving Kendall since 2000. In August, Kendall was set to be included in the trade that sent Brian Giles to the Padres in exchange for Oliver Perez, Jason Bay and Cory Stewart, but the Pirates were unwilling to take on a considerable portion of the $42 million remaining on Kendall's contract. The financial obstacle that negated Kendall's inclusion in the Giles deal last summer would not hamper a trade for Hernandez and Cirillo. The two are under contract for a combined $21.95 million over the next two seasons as compared to the $18 million Kendall will earn during the same period. The Pirates will, however, free themselves of the $24 million owed to Kendall over the final two years of his contract. Hernandez is not signed beyond the 2005 season and Cirillo has a 2006 club option of $7,625,000 with a $1.25 million buyout. Kendall, a three-time National League All Star, bounced back from assorted injuries the previous two seasons to finish sixth in the National League with a .325 batting average in 2003. Currently the longest-tenured player on the Pirates roster, he has been the team's starting catcher since his rookie season in 1996. Kendall has a blanket no-trade clause in his contract, but the San Diego native has expressed a desire to play in his home town and reunite with Giles. While the Pirates have been criticized in recent months for unloading several of their top performers in exchange for inexpensive players with little big-league experience, in acquiring Hernandez and Cirillo the team would be adding two veterans with proven track records. A five-year Major League veteran, he has been praised for his work with Oakland's young pitching staff. The Padres acquired Hernandez and outfielder Terrence Long from the A's in exchange for outfielder Mark Kotsay on November 26, 2003. Cirillo, 34, is a 10-year veteran with a .299 career batting average. He hit .312 or better during each season from 1998-2001 with the Milwaukee Brewers and Colorado Rockies and was named to NL All Star team in 1997 and 2000. A solid defensive player, he shares the Major League record with former Pirate John Wehner for the most consecutive errorless games by a third baseman. In an effort to get career back on track, Cirillo has undergone Lasik eye surgery this winter and is enrolled in boxer's training to improve his agility. He was acquired by the Padres in a six-player deal on Jan. 6. The addition of Cirillo would enable the Pirates to move recent free agent acquisition Chris Stynes to second base. Freddy Sanchez and Bobby Hill, two prospects acquired in trades last season who were expected to compete for the second base job during Spring Training, would likely start the season at Triple-A Nashville.
