Gary Sheffield offers to play 3rd base

Featured Replies

Gary Sheffield told Yankees GM Brian Cashman that he'd be willing to move to third base to replace the injured Aaron Boone. This isn't going to happen. Sheffield hasn't been a regular third baseman since 1992 and he was moved off the position for a very good reason.?

You never know. It isn't like the Yankees are the best fielding team in the world anyways.

hell then they could go trade for a Reggie Sanders or someone respectable for RF

If they move him to third, I'd be willing to bet that he's moved back to The OF in less than a month.

Gary is not that mobile anymore plus if he was capable of playing third, would they really give Aaron Boone an extension in the first place? They could have just put Sheff at third next year when Mags is on the market.

He didn't play 3rd for 10 years! I would not advocate moving soriano to SS, even though he played that position 4 years ago.

Gary is just rying to act classy...two words you will usually not find in the same sentence. We had a guy in AA last year who played third with a .447 obp and over .500 slug (but he's 27). Andy Phillips might be able to make a move, we have henson and almonte, and of course cairo and wilson.

That obp guy was some dude named myrow, who did this: (.306/.447/.525)

I think that warrants a man a shot. He drew 107 walks!

Myrow's defense is said to be bad, maybe not Giambi/Soriano/Jeter/Sheff bad but bad. Also he's 27 and has never played above AA.

Anyone think the A's, Red Sox and Blue Jays are rethinking their no bunt swing for the fences strategies? I'd play all slap hitters against the Yankees' infield.

Okay, Soriano, he's my team for your $500 bet.

C: Pierzynski/Pudge

1B: Snow

2B: Castillo

3B: can't think of a slap-hitting 3B

SS: David Eckstein

LF: Matsui (hits a lot of infield singles)

CF: Pierre

RF: Ichiro

When he first joined the marlins didn't he play 3b? I'm trying to remember, I was thinking the marlins were the first team to move him to the OF.

Yeah, he played third base a couple times here for us.

Sheffield's stats clearly show that Gary played 133 games at 3rd base in 1993, 66 with the Marlins. Sheffield had 34 errors in 1993. In the 1994, Sheffield was moved to outfield and has not played 3rd base since.

Sheffield also played SS in 1988 and 1989.

NO!

Mike Lowell wouldn't be the best offensive third baseman in the game anymore.

There's Scott Rolen, Bill Mueller and Eric Chavez.

Two have GGs and Lowell doesnt. but let's compare their away OPS, adjusted ops, and plain old ops.

Chavez .864 total, .859 on the road, ops+ 132

Rolen .910 total, .913 on the road, ops+ 139

Lowell .881, .886 on the road, ops+ 132

Mueller .938 total, .903 on the road, ops+ 140

The best hitter is probably Rolen because he was most proven throughout his career, but Bill Mueller always had a good on base ability, so don't expect a sudden dissappearance of skill. Nevertheless, Lowell is not the best 3rd baseman in the game, even offensively.

Rolen is better offensively and defensively. If you are counting intangibles, why can't I just make the claim derek jeter is better than Alex Rodriguez or Edgar Renteria?

So no, Rolen is better.
