February 16, 200422 yr Dear Friends, I have just read and signed the online petition: "Salary Cap on MLB" hosted on the web by PetitionOnline.com, the free online petition service, at: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/mlb70371/ I personally agree with what this petition says, and I think you might agree, too. If you can spare a moment, please take a look, and consider signing yourself. Best wishes, :thumbup
February 17, 200422 yr I don't believe in salary caps. If you have the money, go ahead and spend it, but you will pay luxury tax. On the other side, if you don't spend a set minimum, you will be fined the difference between the minimum and your payroll. This should all go into the revenue sharing pot.
February 17, 200422 yr read my words...a salary cap will kill the passion that teams have in competing. Look at the watered down NFL and NBA which have no balance and yet are supposed to be leaders in balance. MLB is going in the right direction. Selig has good ideas, but he has terrible bedside manner and execution. This current CBA is going to help alot.
February 17, 200422 yr Wouldn't the Players Union have to agree with that? And haven't I read that the MLB Player's Union is the most powerful union in sports (or was it America?). I don't see them agreeing to it.
February 17, 200422 yr Das, you keep your socialism out of baseball. The NBA sucks and is declining because of it, and the NFL is following suit. Keep the free market and MLB the way it is going.
February 17, 200422 yr what did i say that was socialist? i simply said your minimum salary does nothing.
February 17, 200422 yr What Baseball needs is something like football or basketball salary wise i think. or just keep it the same.
February 17, 200422 yr Das, you keep your socialism out of baseball. The NBA sucks and is declining because of it, and the NFL is following suit. Keep the free market and MLB the way it is going. I guess it's okay for King George to spend $1 billion on payroll if he pays his dues. Sounds like a winner.
February 17, 200422 yr Das, you want NBA style, socialist hard caps and minimums and that is just not good for baseball.
February 17, 200422 yr if that will improve the competitive balance then yes. when you have a team that spends 200 million in salary and one that spends 20 million then something is wrong. if you cant see that then you are either a) blind b) stupid c) both
February 17, 200422 yr Das, you keep your socialism out of baseball. The NBA sucks and is declining because of it, and the NFL is following suit. Keep the free market and MLB the way it is going. Oh yeah I'm sure NFL is going down. Since its the highest rated sport and most popular sport. And like Das said where is the NHL headed..
February 17, 200422 yr At one time I wanted this more than anything. But I have come to realize that Baseball is the most tantalizing all-round sport in the world, because the off-season is without a doubt more significant than any other sport.
February 17, 200422 yr Das, you want NBA style, socialist hard caps and minimums and that is just not good for baseball. Cape, what's so socialist about a salary cap?
February 17, 200422 yr and if you recall my proposals.... it allowed teams flexibitlity to go over the cap by any amount to sign home grown prospects, thus making a quality farm system that much more important for teams and allowing one to indentify superstars with one organization and not this nomadic style you see in MLB in many cases.
February 17, 200422 yr An NBA salary cap and minimum would require every team to contribute virtually all revenue into a pot to be evenly distributed putting higher revenue teams in positions where they cannot keep star players due to higher caps while teams who give little can sign these players with redistributed money. If I were a Yankee fan, I would be mad. Heck, don't the high revenue Dolphins have cap issues every year because of it? Caps are bad for baseball
February 17, 200422 yr you call me socialist for advocating a salary cap and then dont even know fully what i have proposed. real intelligent. and you said a salary minimum of 20 million has to exsist. That is ludicrious.
February 17, 200422 yr The NHL has currency conversion, Canadian tax, and available fund issues. MLB doesn't have teams ready to fold due to a strike. MLB teams have the liquidity to avoid folding and don't rely on heavy gov't subsidies alongside stadium subsidies like the NHL teams do. Don't compare apples and oranges.
