February 19, 200422 yr This fighting between Steinbrenner and Henry is very entertaining. Round One: *Ding*
February 19, 200422 yr henry is a crying little baby. him and steinbrenner have been in an arms race all winter. he should of sacked up and paid the 16 million.
February 19, 200422 yr What I don't get in all this hand-wringing over the Yankees is that nobody points out that other teams didn't even try to get him. Considering Texas was willing to pay $9 million/year of his salary, how come the Dodgers, Cubs, or White Sox didn't try to acquire A-Rod? How come Seattle didn't try to re-acquire him, since he would cost LESS than what they offered him 3 years ago AND they just cleared $8 million off their books with Sasaki going back to Japan? All of these teams had expiring contracts and young players that they could've given to Texas. People need to stop blaming the Yankees, because other teams are too afraid or too cheap to act. because AROD said he would waive his no-trade clause ONLY and ONLY if he were traded to boston or NY. thats y no 1 else even bothered 2 offer any deals.

February 20, 200422 yr Probably some of the small market teams want Salary Caps. But if there was a salary cap Red sox would have to get rid of some players or rework there contracts and i dont think they wanna do that. Jim Henry is just pissed off right now.

February 20, 200422 yr BOROWITZ report.com Updated February 19, 2004 Breaking News STEINBRENNER BUYS FENWAY PARK Homeless Red Sox Cry Foul George Steinbrenner?s buying spree continued unabated today as the New York Yankees owner purchased Fenway Park, the legendary home of the arch-rival Boston Red Sox. In buying Fenway out from under the Sox, Mr. Steinbrenner has left his Eastern Division rivals without a stadium for the first time in their history, jeopardizing the Red Sox? bid for the American League pennant. ?It is hard to win a championship without pitching or hitting,? said David Hastings, a sports historian at the University of Minnesota. ?But it is virtually impossible to win without a stadium.? Red Sox owner John Henry, who spent most of the day scrambling to find a high school sandlot where his team might play the 2004 season, held an emotional press conference in Boston to denounce the big-spending Yankee honcho. ?Damn you, George Steinbrenner, damn you!? swore Mr. Henry, shaking his fist violently. But Mr. Steinbrenner?s shopping day had barely begun, as he went on to outbid the Walt Disney Company for the legendary puppet characters, the Muppets. While Mr. Steinbrenner did not indicate what role the Muppet characters might play in the Yankee organization, his aggressive purchase of Kermit, Miss Piggy et al reinforced the impression in baseball circles that the Yankee owner is willing to buy anything that is not nailed down. Having assumed the $250 million contract of third baseman Alex Rodriguez, however, Mr. Steinbrenner acknowledged that he might have to economize by outsourcing second base to India. In other baseball news, North Korea?s Kim Jung-Il revealed that he attempted to acquire A-Rod until he was told that A-Rod was not a piece of nuclear fuel.
February 20, 200422 yr because AROD said he would waive his no-trade clause ONLY and ONLY if he were traded to boston or NY. thats y no 1 else even bothered 2 offer any deals. I honestly don't believe that for a second. That's what the Mets are saying to cover their asses for dropping the ball on A-Rod, but I don't believe for a sec that he would've turned down the chance to play for either of those 3 teams (Dodgers, White Sox, Mariners) that were all legit playoff contenders last year. A-Rod, without a doubt, puts the White Sox and Dodgers in the playoffs this year. So, he gets both the spotlight of playing in a top-4 market, and being on the playoff stage.

But if there was a salary cap Red sox would have to get rid of some players or rework there contracts and i dont think they wanna do that. Jim Henry is just pissed off right now. See, that's why the cap should be the Red Sox payroll. Because you know that's only fair. A salary cap does nothing but hurt players. Without comprehensive revenue sharing, and baseball clubs becoming seperate from WGN, TBS, Yes, NESN, etc. a team like the Yankees will always have the sizable market advantage over the Royals and Athletics. Of course shmucks like Henry and the other big market teams don't want that because that means taking money from them and giving it to teams that actually try to win on meager resources. Screw the Brewers and Pirates, they're making hand over fist in cash and won't invest in their clubs. P.S. It's John Henry, not Jim Hendry, your GM.
