Hank Goldberg's fate at WQAM in jeopardy

Recommended Posts

Meeting could decide WQAM fate of Goldberg

Staff and Wire Reports

Hank Goldberg's status at WQAM could be determined during a meeting today with general manager Greg Reed. Goldberg has been kept off the air since March 2 following an off-air incident involving Luanne Winick, the station's general sales manager.

If the meeting goes well, Goldberg could be back on the air at 4 p.m. today. But Reed said Monday he has not decided whether to retain Goldberg.

''I don't know what will happen,'' Reed said. ``It depends on how the meeting goes.''

Said Goldberg: ``I will hear what he has to say. I've talked to Luanne. We're OK. It was a misunderstanding. I'm contrite. I just want to go on.''

On another matter, Reed said he was ''exploring'' the possibility of adding Howard Stern's morning show if Clear Channel's Big-106 does not resume carrying it.

***Mr. Loria, please move the team to a real radio station for 2005. WIOD, WRFX, and WAXY are all strong and good radio stations that could serve as a true flagship.***

Oh I hope they dont pick up that crap.

People like Neil Rogers and Howard Stern don't talk sports and shouldn't be on a SportsRadio station. They both suck anyway. I have listened to both and they insult my intelligence.

Cape, I happen to agree with regarding Stern and Rogers but perhaps it suggests that your suggestion that the Marlins and Panthers may leave QAM was prophetic.

Perhaps Reed is starting to move the station in another direction to deal with that eventuality. If I were the Marlins I couldn;t get away from QAM fast enough.

Reed wants to turn WQAM into a liberal rival to the conservative and lovable 610 WIOD. Question is will Clear Channel/610/940 fork the money for the Marlins and Panthers and eventually compete for the Dolphins. I think they will. Marlins baseball is the best local radio sports programming and it is going to cost a good $5-10 million a year for the new deal. WQAM pays $3 million and they are losing money on the Dolphins and Panthers. Neil and the Marlins are what put them over most of the time.

If you don't believe me, read Beasley's press release on earnings. Stock symbol BBGI.

Either Reed can turn it into a money making operation, or it goes down the drain. They are running short on money.

Local business: Beasley Broadcast Group Inc. reports revenue increase

By LAURA LAYDEN, [email protected]

November 4, 2003

The Florida Marlins beat the odds to win the World Series, and the team helped a Naples-based radio operator beat its revenue projections for the third quarter.

Beasley Broadcast Group Inc., which trades under BBGI on the Nasdaq, reported Monday that its consolidated net revenues rose 2 percent in the three months ending Sept. 30 to $29.4 million. That was up from $28.8 million a year earlier, in part because more people tuned into WQAM, the company's Miami-based station that airs Marlins games. The interest generated more advertising.

"As you can imagine we are as thrilled as anybody -- I guess that's outside New York -- about the Marlins' success this year," said Bruce Beasley, the company's president and chief operating officer in a conference call announcing the company's operating results on Monday.

"We are hopeful the excitement generated by the team will translate into sustainable community support for the franchise in the years ahead. So we view our relationship with the team as an investment in the future," he said.

Beasley's performance beat both company and analyst projections for the third quarter.

The Marlins' success will also boost profits for Beasley Broadcast in the fourth quarter. The company attributes about $500,000 in revenues to the playoffs and World Series alone.

For the three months ending Sept. 30, Beasley reported that net income was up more than 110 percent to $3.1 million, or 13 cents per diluted share, from $1.5 million, or .06 cents per diluted share in the same period a year ago. The company reported a $1.2 million gain on the sale of 50,000 shares in FindWhat.com, the growing Fort Myers-based Internet company that's also publicly traded.

George Beasley, company chairman and CEO, said the quarter marked "yet another period of steady progress" for the company, which owns five stations locally and more than three dozen nationwide.

"Our revenue grew at a modest 2 percent, overcoming what continues to be a challenging economic and advertising climate," he said. "We saw good growth in our Miami, Fort Myers and Las Vegas market clusters, as well as our Greenville-New Burn (in the coastal Carolinas) market cluster."

Las Vegas continues to be a particularly strong market for Beasley. National sales revenues grew nearly 80 percent in the third quarter, compared to the same period a year ago. Local sales were also up by about 6 percent.

"Overall in the Las Vegas and southern Nevada region, a strengthening economy, low unemployment and new job growth have been driving the economy," Bruce Beasley said.

On the flip side, the economy in the Fayetteville, N.C., area is suffering because of the continued deployment of troops to Iraq, and that is hurting Beasley's stations in that market. The decrease in revenues seen at those stations has been partially offset by increases generated by the Florida Marlins in Miami, company officials said.

For the nine months ending Sept. 30, Beasley's net revenue increased to $82.3 million, up from $82 million a year earlier. The company reported net income of $9.5 million, or .39 cents per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $6.9 million, or .28 cents per diluted share, for the same period in 2002.

"Despite a few challenges and some distractions we remain squarely focused on improving this company's competitive position," George Beasley said. "To that end, we continue to make what we believe are key investments in our largest markets, like Philadelphia and Miami, in order to stay competitive."

He said company officials are looking at every aspect of operations to try to improve efficiency and that they continue to work to reduce long-term debt.

In the fourth quarter, Beasley expects a decline in the company's net revenues of up to 5 percent. That's in part because the company has canceled a chili cook-off that was hosted by radio station WXTU in Philadelphia last year. The event, which featured a country concert, has been suspended because so many country singers have performed in that market this year.

Because it's an off year, there will be an absence of political advertising at all of Beasley's stations, which collected $500,000 in political advertising income for Beasley Broadcast in the last three months of 2002.

Founded in 1961, Beasley Broadcast now owns or operates 41 stations in 10 large and mid-size markets in the United States.

Locally, the company owns WRXK 96.1 FM, WJBX 99.3 FM, WXKB 103.9 FM, WJPT 106.3 FM and WWCN 770 AM.

On Monday, the company's shares closed at $14.68, up from Friday's closing price of $14.58.

bwahahaha..... j/k.

Cape doesn't like radio show = radio show sucks and should be thrown off the air.

Cape's opinion = what's good for everyone.

Cape that little dial on the radio actually changes stations! I know it's old-fashioned, but they still make them that way!

Hotcorner, I don't have a problem with them airing the show as long as they are decent. But there is no logic by having Neil Rogers and Howard Stern on a SportsRadio station now is there? The economics of SportsRadio 560 don't work and it will have to change something.

I am entitled to my opinion, just as everyone else is. My opinion is that the Marlins voice is WQAM, and if your voice is not reputable, you aren't either.

I do know how to turn my dial, and that is why it rarely ever stops on 560 AM, only for Marlins, Panthers, Hurricanes, or Dolphin games. Even then it is rare.

of course you're entitled to your own opinion.

but face it, if Rush Limbaugh got thrown off WIOD for his drug troubles for example, and suddenly Greg Reed announced Rush was moving to WQAM, I get a pretty good feeling you wouldn't be up in arms over this.... :whistle

personally i think 24-7 sports talk is just too much. whether it's news, entertainment, shock, whatever, I need a break from sports talk. considering that Neal & Stern both have good ratings, I don't think I'm the only one.

I think he was trying to say that in broadcasting Marlins games WQAM is supposed to have a good image overall, and if it doesn't have a good image then it reflects poorly on the Marlins.

Rush used to be on WQAM, I didn't think he belonged there. When he moved to WINZ it was great because now it made sense because it was a news/talk station. Then WINZ and WIOD traded and that is where he is now. I don't have a problem with Stern or Neil airing as long as they are decent, but they don't fit in on a Sports Radio station and I don't think a family oriented program like the Marlins are would fit well.

Also, WQAM gives no respect and is constantly attacking the Marlins and Loria.

uhh.... I dont think anyone listens to the radio every hour of the day, so when I get in the car and I want to hear some sports talk at 11-2pm in the afternoon, I think I should be able to than hear the crap on 560 with Neil Rogers. They should just make it Sports talk all the time, so listeners can depend on that no matter what time of the day it is when they get in the car they can hear some decent sports talk if they like.

All of WQAM's hosts are pretty rude.

I think Loria will give WIOD/WRFX a try if he can get a deal done. They have some good sports talent in Solodkin, LaMont and Sedano which are not rude to callers and report sports very well. WRFX actually gives Marlins updates more than WQAM and WIOD gives reports on the Marlins when large things happen like AJ getting injured or opening day every half hour when needed. I never see WQAM do that willingly.

His sports knowledge stops at football. Basketball, baseball, and hockey don't exist in his world other than things people do/watch during the football offseason.

He is rude to callers, although not as bad as Hank. He also thinks that he is god because he calls the Dolphins games and was on the perfect team.

Don Strock has a better radio show on WAXY 790 about FIU athletics where he mentions more than just football. Check it out sometime!

His knowledge of other sports is not up to par with Football but is not like concetrate on football. The fact is he encourage callers to talk about hwat happening now which Heat and Marlins.Very entertaining show all around.Only reason I listen to Hank show sometimes is when he has Ira Widerman or Berdanino.
