Im glad you point this out...This Gonzo really shocked me early last season when he came out on fire. But he quickly went back to his normal form.

 

 

For those who are expecting a 250 avg..... I say that we should expect more. Maybe not much more, but no less than 265 avg.

 

i would love to see him post a 273 avg which is not entirely impossible if he works hard at hitting the ball in the gaps instead of trying to overpower it all the time.

 

Well anyhow....He does worry me bud...not just cause of this short spring season start...but because of the way he approaches the at bats.

Which is even less than he did last year. I can't believe how many people don't know that he had very decent numbers last year. Sure, it mostly came in the first half of the season, but if he can spread that through an entire season more consistently, he'd have more fans. I, for one, see a big year out of him....Although I've always said anything he hits is a plus for me. I'd keep him on this team forever just for his defense. He was robbed of a Gold Glove last season.

Too many people are infatiuated with offense. Can we have 8 guys that hit like him in a lineup? Hell no. We probably can't even have 2. But, we can certainly afford 1, especially with what he brings to the table in the field. The guy saves more hits with his glove than he costs us with his impatience.

 

And it's not like he hasn't shown signs with the bat. He's never going to be a superstar with the lumber, but .270 with 25 home runs isn't exactly out of the question.

 

Honestly, he could hit .230 and I would be content. He's too good in the field. There's more aspects to the game than hitting. You think having him back there doesn't help our pitching staff, even when it's not hit to him?

I agree 100% with the above. He MIGHT hit .250 and I expect that to be the ceiling of his performance, but I dont really care because I believe hes one of the better IF in the game defensively at the MOST important fielding position. Pitchers figured Alex out...you don't need to throw him strikes because he will chase the outside breaking ball 9/10 times. If he worked on improving his recognition of that pitch then he will be incredible, maybe even the numbers he put up in the first 2 months of 2003. Unfortunately his problem is one of the toughest to fix and I dont see much improvement there.
